Unhappy help: diff cover magnet came off

Some how or another (probably when I tossed it on the ground) when I was changing my diff fluid I knocked the magnet of the diffcover (Its the factory cover.).

Sucks it came off, but at the same time glad it didnt come off while it was attached to the diff.

Is there any way to glue it back on?

If not, what new cover do your guys recommend?

thanks

Use a 2 part epoxy and it will work fine, having it will lessen a chance of bad things happening.

Tried thumbing through my helms and couldn't find what they use - dealer might be able to tell you exactly. Gluing it back on is a lot cheaper than an aftermarket cover unless you just want one, I have a TA cover on mine.

Thanks.

Going to try the two part epoxy.

So I can get the right epoxy, does anyone know what the normal operating temperature of the differential is?

Yeah I know what youre saying but...

1) the magnet isnt that strong it slides around very easy

2) Its on a vertical surface obviously with some curve

3) My luck, one big bump and its in the gears!

Just trying to be safe. I have some epoxy but its only good for up to 200 F.

besides GM must have had a good reason to have it glued on. We all know they are so cheap they only do things when they have a reason to!

It's not glued on! I am on my fourth f-body now and every time I change the rear end fluid in any of them, I pop the magnet off so that I can clean the metal shavings, and then put it back on. It goes in a specific area on the cover that is not rounded.

I've never seen one glued on either. I've been doing this for quite a few years myself and they just center over the "bump" in the cover and there is a flat ring around that bump for the magnet to stick to.

Wipe it and the cover down and get them clean, then stick the magnet back in place and reinstall the cover. You'll be just fine.

It is glued on! At least it was. You can see the adhesive. And by glued I meant to say bonded.

Your's may have not been but mine was. I would have taken a pic and showed you the old adhesive but Ive already removed it so I could re-bond the magnet. This is the third time Ive changed the fluid and the other two times the magnet was not loose. I know for a fact because the metal shavings were a pain to get off.

Yes, it does go in a certain position on the cover, the cover is dimpled so the center hole of the magnet sits over the dimple but it is not perfectly flat.

When I place the magnet into position and hold the cover in the vertical position and tap the bottom of the cover with my hand the magnet will "walk" down. I cant be sure, but I imagine that the churning of the fluid may be significant and could cause the magnet to move. Those two reasons are why I am concerned with re-bonding it. Chances are it probably wont come loose and work its way into the gears but like I said with my luck it will.

Anyways, its all taken care of now.
