I have a bolt ons 99 ss with a 6-speed. I have a lid, shorties and a tune. On a street tire i went 13.30 at 108.32. I am buying a 12-bolt and DRs. The drag racer in me wants to get the 4.30 gear, but i am second guessing it. I know with my tire size and mph i should cross at just over 6000rpm. Is this too high and will i acctually be slower e.t. wise with a 4.30 or will it have enough steam at 6000 that it would be worth it. I currently shift at 5800, is this about right? Info would be greatly appritiated. Thanks!

with 4.10s in my car i am crossing the 1/4 at the top of 4th gear perfectly. Anyhting higher and i would be hitting the rev limiter.

I love my 4.30's but I am crossing the line right @7000. I am on a 26" tire too (275/50/15). mine is a M6 and crossing the line in 4th.

I had 4.30's and it was a bit much for me! It was fine with the 28's on it, but with 26 or smaller tires I had to go into 5th gear in the quater. I also have a 6 speed and my rev limiter was set at 6800rpms. It would hit limiter before the quater everytime if I had anything smaller than a 28. I vote 4.10's!

What was your mph, i have 430's and according to fbody.org gear calc a 27 inch should be fine for me? i should be some where iin the 114-118 range.

I was getting anywere from 118 to 121mph with spray on the 26 inch tall tires. When I switched to the 28's I was getting 120mph n/a. I never sprayed with the 28's, because my 12 bolt broke. I'm guessing it would have been around 128 to 131mph with the 28's on my 150 shot. The 4.30's is just to much with the 26 or 27 inch tall tires. I allways ran out of gear. My new rear has 4.10's and that's what I would recomend from my past experience

It sounds like you want 4.10s. Your rev limiter is gonna kill you except with a 28" like people have been saying. Maybe after a cam when youre shifting at 6800 you would be ok, but for now i would do 4.10s

Im in the same boat, I expect to be getting a cam where it rev out to 6800 rpms even on a 26" tall tire, it would put me in the 120-121 mph area, if you go to 28" tall you gain like 7 mph.

For you Id stay 4.10's. I myself have time to decide, but both have their good points and bad points. I know for a fact that if you got a crazy cam, the 4.30s would make it drive like stock

4.10s. While I was only bolt-ons, I trapped 113 with the 4.10s. I crossed the line with the shift-lite on, anymore gear and I wouldnt have made it. With the stock tires and bolt-ons, they are the perfect gear.

4.30's here . you would have to raise your limiter to like 7000 rpm to run 26" tires. 28" tires are perfect with 4.30 gears.

Unless you're going to run a high rpm cam (6900-7000) and tall tires, you better stick with 4.10's. I trapped 119.2 with 4.10's on DR's with a sissy 3200 rpm launch on DR's. Mine was a daily driver, full weight, factory suspension, 10 bolt. I ran it to 6600 or so

If its a DD or even used a few times a week to drive around from point A to B and isnt just a drag car or weekend cruiser, it would be wise to get 4.10s instead of 4.30s.

I went with 3.73s, because I still want a top end/high top speed.

The difference from a 4.10 to 4.30 is not much, saying get 4.10's if it is your daily driver and 4.30's if it is a track only car doesn't even make since.

You're talking about 0.20 gear ratio change, you are only looking at 200 rpm max difference driving 65 mph on the freeway.

Use a gear calculator and see for yourself.

Personally I would get the 4.30's and run your 26" tire then see what mph and rpm you run, then if you only need a couple mph run a 27" tire, if you need a few more run a 28".



I have ran 3.42, 3.73, 4.10 and 4.56 gears in my camaro that's a 6 speed car. I think the 4.30 would work great especially if you plan to add a cam later.

6,000 rpm on a 26" tire should be right around 108 mph, 27" will be 112 and 28" would give you 116 mph.

Don't forget though adding a cam will raise your rpm range and going from 6000-6500 is close to a 10 mph jump even on the smaller 26" tires.

So when you add the cam and pick up more power you'll be ok because you'll have more useable rpm to put you through the lights at your new higher shift point.

+1 I'm running Richmond pro street 4.33's in my 9" and at 70mph i'm sitting @2000rpm's...all i can say about the bigger gears is that 1st gear is kinda short if you're just cruising but if you're bangin through them it's a blast...the response of 5th gear is amazing IMO it almost feels like 4th gear when i had 4.10's...you can't go wrong either way it's all about what you plan to do with the car in the future honestly...good luck
