Default Clunky Moser 12 Bolt

I just had a 12 Bolt put in. For the first few days it was ok(except for the whine). 500 miles later it started clunking and making weird noises when turning. Almost sounds like the anti lock brakes are engauging and disengauing, but I'm not using the brake nor do I feel the pedal pulse or wheels lock up. This only happens when I'm going slow and turning hard right or left. Like pulling into a driveway. I'm going to play with it more tonight after work If I find anything else out I'll post it.

Has anyone had this problem?

The rear is a Moser 4 channel, with 3.90's and a posi.

Sounds like your rear end came with a spool and not posi.

Just changed oil noise still there. I'm just wondering I put on a set of spohn relocation brackets and adj lower control arms at the same time. I wonder if I'm hearing the Poly bushings on the control arms. Oly thing that makes me think not is the fact that it doesn't do it when everything is cold when I first tkae off. after 5 mins of driving is when I start to hear it. Gonna try putting the stock control arms on tomorrow.

Anyone have spohn control arms? Are they noisy?

Thanks Rob

Mine seems to do this some like the tires are biting real hard almost like a spool but it's not so bad that I would even think twice about it. I'm still using regular gear oil no additive either.

That sound is normal if you have the HD Eaton Posi. Mine does the exact same thing. Do a search and you will see it is normal. It is just the HD Posi locking and unlocking around turns especially when slow.

I do have the eaton posi, and I'm pretty sure it is the posi locking up and disengauging. However I spkoe with Moser and they assured me its not normal. The tech I spoke with said that I really shouldn't notice any differance from the stock 10 bolt. I didn't think to ask him about the whine but as far as this problem goes according to him its not normal.

I switched out the control arms last night and the problen is still there. So it was not the poly bushings on them.

I can also hear a faint squeaking sound in between the clunks and creaks. I'm going to call Moser back today.

If they tell me to pull it out and send it to them I'm gonna go postal.

Same problem here, not sure if its a problem though. I was told to add more additive and it made a little difference. The thing that I find weird is I get the noise when I pull into the driveway just like you said and when I make 3 point turns and stuff. However I noticed that it only make the noise if I have the clutch pressed in or if I am in nuetral. If I pull into my drive while turing and keep it in gear I dont get the noise. I was wonering if your does the same thing.

My 12-bolt did that with standard lube. Switched to Redline Synthetic and it disappeared

Mine does it with the clutch in or out doesn't matter. seems worse with the clutch out and in gear. Is worse when the fulid is hot after a few minutes of running. Mine will do it on a not so sharp left or right hand turn also. The tighter the turn the worse the noise.

Moser told me not to run synthetic lube in there rear. I asked he said synthetic lube will screw up the rearend

Well as for the richmond 3.90 gear set. I have it and it suc** A$$.

I was told that break in was to put the car on stands and run the rear forward and reverse for 5 mins each way then cycle heat 3 times and your done.

I have additive Moser says I should put more in. Maybe I could just fill up the diff with additive and oatmeal and not run any lube at all.

Just a stock panhard. But I do have adjustable control arms but they weren't noisy before.

this rear didnt do this until 30 miles ago. I put almost 500 miles on it before this started.

Moser says they wont cover to have it taken out if it has to come back WTF is that. It's their piece of crap that is the problem.

well welcome to the moser (I can't hear over all that noise) Club, How they got a rep for having a good product for our cars is beyond me, their setup sucks and the excuse is allways "Well its Strong" and we cannot argue that point so there are a few things to try.
1. did you break in the clutchs on the posi?
( get in a parking lot and drive tight circles in both directions for 10min(

2. Do you have GM posi additive in the rearend?
(if not get it)

3. Do you also have an ajustable panhard bar?
( if so you may have the jam nut adjusted to the wrong side...it happens and clunks like mad)

3. Thank your lucky stars you do not have a richmond 3.90 gear set, sounds like a ho screaming for more money. My car is fast but I wonder was it all worth it!!!!

Well I was just telling you what I have read in the past. I know I have plenty of additave in mine and it has always done it. I was told it was the Posi locking and unlocking only on slow turns like yours. If its not normal it sure does it in alot of cars!!

I have the HD Eaton in my Strange 12 bolt... it does the same thing. I didn't hear mine till I switched to poly/poly control arms.. I plan to try replacing the front bushings with rubber.. see if that helps.

My Moser (Eaton HD) clunks so bad sometimes I don't like driving my car.

I've had my 12-bolt for about a year and I had the rear end checked about three days ago because it was clunking and found out the backlash was way off, so I had to buy a new install kit and have it redone. The whine was also really loud but that was always like that so I don't know if they set it up wrong or not. I called Moser on the gear whine and they said it was normal because of the way the torque arm is set up. The noise from the gear travels through the torque arm which amplifies the sound in the car. Especially if you have an aftermarket torque arm which mounts to a cross brace like BMR's.

wow, i love how mosier can make such a noisy, expensive and crappy product and still stay wealthy. I live with the loud gear noise, i am used to the noises my posi makes turning at low speeds, and yes, it clunks really bad every time i hit a bump for some odd reason. The bad problem is they always have some awful excuse that is so terrible u want to smack them! I spent over 2 grand for a REAR END, i spent less than that and got over two times the amount on other rear end on a cruise. I can deal with whine, and the posi, i just want to stop this horrid clunking that goes on, its really Unacceptable , and we need to get together and do something to mosier about it!!

I added a second tube of additive as Moser told me to. The noise did quiet down a lot. Gonna try thr 10 min circle thing tonight if weather permits. Hope that helps more.

It's hard enough to live the remarkably, increadibly loud WHINE this hunk of junk puts out. It's not too bad while I'm sitting still, driving through a hurricane or a tornado. Other than that it sucks.
