Ok, 400 miles on my moser 9in today and I lost a wheel. All the studs sheered off my axle and I about lost a tire going down the highway.

First off, all the lugs were tight, none of them loosened off thats for sure. And they arent to tight because I've been tightening wheels for years and havent had a wheel ever fly off.

The car is just on regular 275 ventus turds. It has a detroit locker in it. I'm just wondering how the studs broke off.






Last year my buddy was on the way to the track with his new moser 12 bolt and the same **** happened to him. He was on the side of the road with his CCW off the car and scraped up. This happened to him only 100ish miles of driving on their studs.


Luckily I got my car over to the side before the wheel came off but I did have to pay a tow bill home with the car.



Does anyone know what brand studs they use with their kits? The shop I had set up my rear end wouldnt use the wheel bearings that were with the kit because they said they were junk, shop I've done business with for years and know they've never steered me wrong.


After seeing this **** happen to two cars now and the same ****, I'm starting to think moser is saving pennies packing their products with ****.



Anyone know a part number or knurl size on the moser 31 spline axles? I want to get some hardened ARP studs for it.

 

thanks for the info. i just pulled apart my moser also my center section self destructed. since i have it out ill change the wheel studs too.

 

Moser studs are designed to meet or exceed the safety requirements of NHRA and IHRA. Aluminum wheels have a habit of loosening up, and I'll bet this is why your studs sheered off.

so what would be your recomendation to prevent this? "lockite"? yes I know torqueing could remedy this too which I tq my lug nuts for this reason but, will locktite hurt aluminum?

 

What were you torquing your wheels to, if I may ask ??

My suggestion is to ditch the "import material" wheel studs and step up to some ARP wheel studs. If its worth fixing... its worth fixing correctly.

This isnt the first time I have hear of this (shocking I know), but at this time I can not expound on the subject.

A little advice on sizing... take a hammer and pound out one of the others in the axle. Take direct measurements off of that... so that you can get the right studs the first time. I dont have anything Moser in hand right now, or I could help you out making that determination.

 

Ya thats what I was gonna do if I couldnt find anyone with a size. I just used a 4 way to tighten them, probaly 75lb's in a star pattern like always.


I'm def going to be ordering ARP's this time, hopefully those wont break.

 

Were these 12MM or 1/2" studs?

 

I had 1/2 inch ARPs installed right from moser so I know Im not going to have this happen to mine.

 

I am thinking about picking up some 1/2" screw in ARP studs to replace my Mosers....

 

I just got off the phone with a guy from Moser. Their wheel studs are Grade 8 and they come from Fastenol. Bob

 

Huh.!?!? That's... ODD. You are most likely NOT over torquing them... that is for sure. I just hope that no one ever took an IngersolRand IR2131 to them and streched them. It only takes once... to over strech a fastener.

And FWIW, that would be Fastenal... and their "Fastenal Approved Manufacturer/Vendor" for flanged bolts is located in China.

Got some ARP's and put them in today. These dont look like they'll break.

 

My studs that came on my 12 bolt suck ***. 7/16 studs that are stock length. Im putting in a set of 1/2x12x3 studs right now.

 

Two years later, my ARP studs are doing great. I haven't changed a thing. I believe those studs that came on the rear end are junk.


They are stock 12MM studs.

 

Just the look of the Moser studs that came with my 12 bolt scared me. I swapped in ARP's before installing the rear.

Wow glad I saw this old thread, I lost all 5 Moser studs on my axle, and replaced them with the same and noticed there twisting a little also now. Going to try ARP. Moser seems to be grade 8 and the ARP are ansi rated to 200,000 from what I'm reading.

 

Looks like grade 8 has a tensile strength of 150,000 psi only
