A friend and I just put mine in today. Howls some on the gas but is quiet on decel. Don't know if that will change with a few miles or not. It's a Strange "S" case set up by a local shop w/3.89's, Truetrack, their custom housing, and Moser axles.https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axles/728687-nine-inch-install.html

I've got Motive 3.90's and a TA Cover. It's quieter than it's ever been since I bought it at 40k miles, and I'm still running a stock muffler. I had Richmond gears for a while, and they were annoyingly loud, I hated them. And they broke.

With the A4, you could run cosistant 11's, with that 10 bolt, heads/cam, converter and 3.73 gears. A buddy of mine ran mid 11's all the time and sprayed into the 10's, never broke, and quite. Save your $2500. untill it breaks.

My 9 inch is pretty quite with 4.11 gears and a Trutrac. Not as quiet as a stock gear set because they are performance gears. But, I can't hear them over my exhaust or valve train noise (cam). The guy that set it up told me the noise issues depend on several things. The first is setting it up right (the person doing the work) and the second is the manufacturing tolerances in the gear set. Some sets are easier than others, and some will never be quiet. Sometimes it takes more than one try to get it right. The first one he did for me was fine. The second one he did took three tries to get it right (yes he showed me the patterns each time and they looked good). He cautioned me each time that if it made noise, not to drive it and get it back to him right away. Of course, this is the reason I bought the 9 inch rather than the other offerings--much easier to get the center section in and out.

my new moser 9in. screams at 50 mph on. there was a note in the box that
high performance gears may whine........its funny that when my shop sets
them up they run quiet. theres no excuse for a proper set up to scream

If gears are setup right they shouldnt be rediculously loud you can stand it. Set them up right and they wont be loud, bottom line.

my 9", turetrack, 3.90's motive set up has a little whine to it, you dont hear it until about 55mph and is a tad louder on decel. Its not that bad and I have about 1k miles on it. Im gonna change the oil on it and see what that does.

Default Moser 9"

Brand New Moser 9" here and it whines on decel, around 50 mph it is really humming - annoying!

Be aware that there is NO WARRANTY on these things, if you buy it and it is noisy you will be stuck with it. You will also get your disclaimer in the box that tells you noise is not uncommon and is to be expected.

Funny how some people have no noise in their 9" rear ends.......

Is is set-up, is it gear material (hardness)....those are the questions.

Personally, I believe it is set up. A BIG shop like that probably has kids on an assembly line kicking out 10 a day - to them its just another rear end.

Do your homework.

My stock 3.42's never made a sound, I had a rebuild done and had 4.10's installed. I did a great job of breaking them in, put just over 300 miles on it, never went over 2.5k rpms and never drove more then 30 miles without letting it cool down, they whinned at 45 mph and 75 mph, this weekend was the first time I've launched it and the rear whinnes from 30 up to 50 and it's pretty load now. Kinda strange, but it's happening.

Funny thing is there, in my experience. I have myself and 2 other friends who own Moser 12 bolts, one with 3.42 gears and 2 with 4.10's and from Moser they are louder then the 10 bolt. I had my 3.42's replaced with 4.10's and set up by Eastside Perf. and they are ALOT quiter, still louder then stock 10 bolt but not annoying.

Same setup - been in for several months. Much quieter than my 10 bolt when it was replaced but it was dying painfully. It's a bit louder than the 10 bolt was when I bought the car new but I only have a slight whine on decel - none on acceleration or normal driving. I have an M6 so if you downshift as you slow (like going around a corner) you'll never hear the whine over the exhaust - Kooks w/GMMG catback.
