Default Ford 9" Axle Seals

How far in do the seals need to go? Do they need to just let the bearing go in flush or should they be seated against the inner lip on the axle tubes?

Will new seals come with the new bearings or do you have to buy them separately?

Reason I ask is last time I tried to get them in there fully and bent them. I assume there is no real support being done by the seal other than to just keep the oil from contacting the axle bearing. Is that right?

Thanks,
- john

So one of the techs at Moser told me they use this part:

Chicago Rawhide Seals Part No.: 15141

SEAL 1.500X2.502X.313 @ $3.69/seal
(I.D. x O.D. x Depth/Thickness)

I'll be damned if I can find someone who sells them online so I'm guess I wont' find someone local. All I found was this place online that sold them but it is as much for the handling charge as it is for the seals.

http://www.ebatmus.com

Anyone know if Napa/autozone/etc. would carry these? Do any sponsors sell these if so I'm buying ASAP.

Use a correct size seal installer to hammer the seal to the inner lip. You will feel it when it touches the lip. If not the bearing press ring may touch the seal and destroy it when the axle rotates .

I also would like to know this. I tried to by them at Napa and they were $36 and they were not even the right ones.

I didn't have a socket or a pipe large enough, so I carefully tapped them in with a drift, working my way around the outside and tapping in lightly. You have to get them in straight or you'll damage the seal.

Got the tool from HF for $24 bucks and they went in smooth as silk with no damage what so ever this time. I recommend this over a piece of pipe any day because the surface is flat so it presses on the whole surface of the seal at once.

So I'm guessing that no one has an autozone, napa, or sponsor part # or knowledge of such......(for the actual seals)

I know when I went they were clueless and kept asking for the make/model of my car. BUT if I had brought them a part number to try and cross-reference it may have been a different story. Take that part number in that I posted above and you'll probably find one in at least one of the stores. Try Napa first would be my guess.

I did that. They cross-referenced the 15141 number and gave me the wrong seal for $36. That was what I was refering to in my initial post. Guess I will just order them from the link above. Thanks though

Yeah, they should only be like $3-$5 a seal. I got the ones above and they worked fine. Sorry to hear about the bad part no.

NAPA Part # for ford 9" seal is :15142, it's a SKF Oil Seal, UPC # 0-8531101527-1,even @ full list price is $7.75, this is the cross reference for the RW 15141. Looks like it doesn't fit at first, take your time, needs to fit all the way againest the inner lip.
Best money spent is on the Seal Driver tool !!!!!!!!!! even an inexpensive one,
Also when dealing with Auto Zone,Pep-nuts, etc, can ask for Ford 70-72 PU, 1/2 ton, usally works.

Thanks for the reply. If it had only come a week sooner... I will keep the # you gave for future reference. Thanks again
