Default Need help putting together the illusive $1000 9" rear...

im extremely ignorant in this subject so bare with me:

i know that moser sells the housing/axle package for 9" rears for $1000 and say to go out and get a center section from an old ford somewhere... which cars came with a 31 spline from the factory? were there any cars that came with 3.73s, 3.90s, or 4.10s? do i even want to use the old gears over again? will the truck 9" center sections be heavier/stronger? im only going to have 450rwhp at most, so i dont need something huge...

if i shouldnt use the gears over again, im going to probably pay $600 for parts and labor for a gear change, so thatll put me at like $1800 or so after i find the center section, gear change, and axle/housing package... would it be worth it then? should i just spend $300 more and get the full package? is there no cheap way to do this? am i just going in a circle? help

Ford 1/2 ton pickups and vans is a real good source for 31 spline dropout carrier.
It is a hit miss on the cars though . The majority of the cars came with 28 spline. The high performance models came with the 31 spline . The posi in both cars and trucks is rebuildable.

At best the newest case you will find will be a 1981 from trucks and vans I believe. Thats already 27 years old .

There is a bunch of pages on the net about the Nineinch . This is Kevins page. Most of the pages have the same exact same info. Also from my experience its factual over the years , it is factual.

Where are you gonna get the torque arm provision on the center section, if you get one out of an old ford?

I believe the torque arm provision is on the axle housing itself not on the center section. I've also been told that the stock rear ford center's only hold about 400rwhp and are prone to break at high rpm launches. I'm fixing to order the whole complete setup. If I were you I would order the whole setup for the price. Just seems worth it to me.

The torque arm provision is on the housing. See this pic.

I'm building a 9-inch piece by piece as well at the moment. I just ordered a housing + 31 spline axles from Scott @ DLS yesterday. I still need gears, a yoke, and a pinion support. Once it all arrives I'll make a thread about assembling it.
