What's the smallest tire I can safely put on my factory 17x9's for the winter?

I was thinking a 245/45/17 but they might be a little bit too small. Maybe a 255/45/17? Or should I just stick to a 275/40/17? These are my spare wheels and I need some all-season tires for the winter (probably BFG KDWS).

Well, your screen name says it all <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> j/k I couldn't resist.
245s will be fine on your 17x9s. That would be my pick for a true winter tire. I hope you aren't planning on the KDWs for any kind of snow duty. All-season in those amounts to good rain duty and that's about it. If snow isn't really a concern I'd probably go with the 255s tho.

I'm actually getting KDWSes (Dry Wet Snow). They are rated pretty decent in the snow. Not as good as a dedicated snow tire but that's not what I'm looking for. I have a beater, which I will be driving when it snows, but I don't want to be dead if I get caught in the snow in the Camaro (if it snows while I'm at work for example). Hell, I've been caught with completely bald F1s on the car, in unplowed snow, and I still made it home all right. So anyway, most of my driving in the winter is gonna be on dusty/salty/slushy/wet typical winter roads, with the possibility of having to drive in the snow. I figured a good all season like the KDWS was probably a good choice.
Thanks for the input.

Not sure if this link will work for you or not (must have adobe acrobat):

According to BFGoodrich's web site, they make the KDW in a 235/45R17 size that will work with 7.5" - 9.0" rim. Not sure what it will do to your speedometer. Check outside diameter and compare to what you have now.

I bet those guys on the BMW boards would be looking to put some 205 40's on those 17X9's. j/k If you go with a 245 45 17 you should have the same rolling diameter as you have with a 275 40 17. I have 255 40 17 (on 17X9) on the back of my Bimmer and you could easily get by with a 245 45 17.
