Default gear question

Ok guys, people that have changed out your gears what size was the spacer behind the pinion. I tried the one that was behind my pinion and it wasn't right. I don't think it was the right one to begin with, someone in its life but some used 3:42's in it.......(It had jumkyard markings on it) I can't get he foot print right. I have tried all the shims I have and I cant get the coast to move to the center. I have the drive close but the coast I cant seem I get centered????? And also were exactly should I put the dial indicator to get the most accurate reading?????PLEASE HELP.......I tried it to see what it would do and it whines al the time, with the lash at .008???????

mine was .034 on my 98 Z28 with a 2 series carrier and 2.73 gears. talked to scott when I did mine and he said .034-.036 is the most common for these 10 bolts

when you say you can't get the coast to center do you mean from heel to toe or low flank to high face? The heel to toe isn't a huge concern but it does need to be away from the heel and toe. Take a picture of it and post it on here or send it to scott at driveline solutions and he can help you out.

yeah i think the closest I could get is .037 with the shim kit, you'll probably have to order one special or try to get as close as you can and see if it works

Your backlash seems to be a lot. It really shouldn't be more than .009, ideal for new gears is .005-.007 (If I remember?) but anyways you should have less backlash. It's kind of tough since your picture is blurry, and I'm no expert on tooth patterns, but I'm sure someone else can chime in, where's scott at!! anyways Notice how the pattern is kind of high on the faces? It should be a bit more towards the bottom of the tooth. Also The driveside seems to be too close to the heel. and coast is a bit too close to the toe. When you put load on the gears (driving) the drive side will climb to the heel, and the coast will go towards the toe. so if adjusting the backlash doesn't help this you may want to add .002 to .003 to your pinion shim... what's it at right now anyways?

Hopefully someone here will double check my knowledge so I don't give you the wrong information on this...
