Default 10 bolt spool Q/Idea

How would one go about converting a stock posi into a spool, I see folks talk about welding the spider gears together but can someone provide more info? Can this be done to a V6 open rearend too?

I welded the spider gears on my old 8.5" open rear end. You just weld the spider gears to the carrier. I dont know about doing it to a Posi though, never had one apart to look at it.

I am VERY interested in doing this....

How strong would it be??? Capable of a low 1.5 60?

Well, a real "spool" is a ring gear
carrier that's a solid piece, with
splined axle end receivers. Totally
replaces the carrier.

People weld the spiders as a way of
eliminating the differential action,
but this leaves you with the torque
being put across the stock gear set,
only you went and welded on it (maybe
decreasing the strength of what you
welded on, since it was originally heat
treated for strength). On the plus side,
you don't even have to take it out of
the pumpkin, if you don't mind splatter
bits in your oil <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

It's surprising that there isn't a
spool available for the late F-body
10-bolt, since it's pretty much the same
diff for what, 20 years?

Oh and i did have my spider gears welded. I had no problems while I was running it even at the track. I replaced it because I couldn't stand the set up on the street.

Magnus, I was thinking of those 1-2 rearends you have lying around hehe... Perhaps Intmd8 might have some ideas too... So just weld the spider gears to the carrier?

John, I have 2 2 series open diffs and 1 3 series..

Check out this thread:

Check out this page:

Basically weld the gears to eachother and the carrier.. I think I'm going to do this for the nitrous passes with a 3.23 gear.. I just don't trust the 4.10.

offroaders do it all the time. It's commonly known as a Lincoln Locker.
Not sure how it would hold up on the strip though.
I would clean and then preheat the entire carrier in a oven before welding.
Use stainless wire or rod also.
I guess if my Auburn starts slipping I could try it. Can't rebuild them anyhow.
Whatever you do, make sure you can still get the crosspin out or you can't remove the axles.

Looks like an interesting winter project then.

I'd spray the 3.23 setup out of the hole no problem and if it breaks no biggie we have the trailer now. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I used my welded up open carrier at the strip. All I had was 1.7 60 foot times though. I used regular welding wire, I'm not for sure but I dont think you should use stainless wire on it since it isnt a stainless steel piece your welding on. I never minded it on the street either, I had drag radials, only noticed the locked rear end when taking tight turns, other than that I liked it. It was cheap and didnt care if it broke.

Interesting idea, but now your're betting on the axles to hold up. don't go too far from home w/o a trailor. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
