Default Found my axle noise

I bought the car this way. It has less than 60k miles on it. It was only mildly modified (lid/filter, catback, TBB). It had a roaring noise that would start as soon as the car started to roll. I put it up on a lift before I bought it and the exhaust was touching the driveshaft so I had them fix it before I bought the car. Turns out that wasn't it. The bearing still looks decent so I don't know what caused this. I have a spare so I'm going to swap it out and change the bearing and seal on that side. Hopefully, this won't occur again.

Default axle condition

That axle is junk.... you need a new one. It has worn through the hardened suface and is breaking down fast. Jim

Yeah, I have a spare rear end assembly. I pulled one of the axles out of it to swap. Got it in there but didn't get to finish. I'll button it up in the morning and see how she does.

I got the axle in and everything buttoned up. I test drove it Sunday night. The noise was gone. I hope it doesn't come back. Unfortunately, the cover is leaking. In the past, I have used a gasket and haven't had too many problems. This time I decided to go with the RTV method a lot of people use. Having done so, I don't recommend it. There are just too many places for it to slide and create a leak. I've got to pull the cover again and install a gasket. After that, she should be good to go.

You need to use the gasket and RTV, I've never had problems with past vehicles this way.

I hate RTV...I've always used only the gasket and a torque wrench...never, ever, ever had a leak. When I had the gears changed, I provided them a gasket to use on the housing....they threw it away and used RTV...it leaked and I had to change the fluid/gasket the next day.
RTV is the worst invention ever...I hate it.
