Anyone experience LU problems on the dyno?

Default Anyone experience LU problems on the dyno?

I have had many converters in my car but one thing that puzzles me is when locking up certain brands to get accurate dyno numbers.

Sometimes they unlock and u cant get them to stayed locked?Is this commen?Do others have this problem too?

I'd like to hear from anyone thats had this kind of problem?

I had no problem locking mine on the dyno, but others have posted problems. I suspect it is incomplete programming. I adjust the WOT program and non-WOT settings for shift points and lock-up for use on the dyno.

Joel what would cause a converter to lose power locked up?We locked up my verter and the car lost 20RW?

That is strange?
Maybe locking it up too early?

The lower the RPM, the more difference there will be between locked and unlocked.

JS,

Check out the two lines. The blue line is locked up, the red line is unlocked. Below a certain rpm level, the unlocked line makes more power and torque. Above that point, the locked up converter takes over. <img src="http://www.converter.cc/SSdyno3-23-02TRtuning,L.jpg" alt=" - " />
By the way, you could have lockup problems on the dyno if your 2-3 clutch packs are going south. It's happened to me before.

Pat,I'm also losing 20RW when locking up the converter not just a unlocking problem?This is very strange but I've talked to a few trans guys and they all told me this can happen if its locked too early causing the motor to lug down?


IMO my trans is fine,I have 200PSI and its holding perfect pressues.I think the converter was locked up alittle to early and then it unlocked due to edit.I haver heard edit can do this at times?

I have a REAL hardwired lu switch and I'm gonna test it again above 4500 rpm in 3rd just to make sure I'm okay on another dyno.

I need to make a few runs on the car this weekend.Will see how the trans feels under load,then I'm make my decision about a possible trans problem.

The setup made 396RWHP unlocked A4/4.10 12-Bolt.
No dyno tricks other than a cutout.Power steering was hooked up and ran while dynoing.

As Patrick G stated, if you lost low end and midrange HP after locking up it is because the converter was making torque multiplication. Mine shift extension is 5600+ rpm so at 5000 rpm I make more power unlocked than locked.

If you locked up and lost peak HP that is strange. Did you hear/feel any shudder or any indication that lock-up was incomplete or otherwise slipping? Did you measure KR and timing to see if anything was going on with it?

I as told by my trans guy if I did lock it up too early that I'd see a HP loss...

Theres a shudder in the converter,I think the lu is glazed over Joel.Thats what I believe is causing the problem.

The guys at TCS told me they can build me a killer 4400 for my setup and I was very impressed with them on the phone.

I'm gonna get my shift points set first and go to Atco in 2 weeks to make some runs just the way she sits.Then I might try a converter change.

If the LU clutch isn't cathcing, that's probably your HP.

If I were to switch converter brands, I'd run a TCS.
