hehe, i have that same rear sitting in my garage from my old car.
dana44's are pretty strong, gears/carriers are available everywhere because they are still so popular with the off roading crowd.
if you call up strange or moser they are pretty likely to have the measurements around. back in the day, the 90's, these rears got pretty popular for a while after SLP proved they coudl take a good bit of abuse by dropping them into the early firehawks and some other special racing projects.
any rear shop i ever talked to about them had parts available. the only thing unique about the 3rd gen rear is the axle length, the spline and bearing are the same as the dana'a still being used. there are some dana44's out there that came with larger axle bearings, but moser or whoever you call will know that already.

good luck with it. i beat mine through years of daily driving, autocross(on race tires), drag racing(on slicks), and even a few open track events. carrier eventually got weak, but thats about it.

Default Dana

From what I understand you will almost be money ahead to purchase a new rear from Strange vs converting a Dana for your car.

Here's a couple pics of the Dana in Firehawk #6.

how does this rear-end compare to a 12-bolt, s60, or 9-inch?

These were first offered as a HD service axle assembly from GM parts departments in 1984. It initially was offered with the standard 3rd Gen 10.5" rear disc brakes, and was offered in 3:31, 3:92, and 4:09 ratios. The original over the counter price was around $850. I put one (3:31) in my 1983 Z28.

Funny enough, that car was last registered in Pearland, TX back in '95....

I've always wondered why the hell they offered them for the 3rd Gen cars and never for the 4th Gens with almost twice the power than the '84 models???

They were also sold by SLP direct and through summit racing up to about 96 or 97. They are 3rd gen width so you'll have to use 1.5" wheel spacers to use them in a 4th gen. There are no abs provisions on them. Do a search on www.thirdgen.org for dana44 rearend and you'll find out alot.

I agree. Having owning a Jeep or two I'm familiar with the D44's. They're good for stock, and a bit bigger tire but anytime real power is put through them or hardcore wheeling they're one of the first things to go. I know the ford 8.8 is stronger and is usually much easier to find. (don't know how it would work under a F Body though)
