Default 4:10's experiences

I wanted to see what you guys thought of your 4:10 gears. How much different will it be from the stock 3:73 that I have. Also how much will it affect my track times. My current best is a 13.5 at 107 mph with a 2.2 60'.

I love my 4.10s. Definitely an improvement over the stock 3.42s. What kind of tires do you have on the car? 4.10s probably won't make much of a difference and may actually hurt your times if you can't hook up. When I already had 4.10s, I picked up 3/10s by running a Nitto DR instead of the stock F1s.

Stock 3.73????? Our cars only came with 3 rear options from the factory. For A4 2.73 and 3.23 and for the M6 3.42. I really like the 4.10's that I had installed. The SOTP difference is incredible. Before putting the gears in I would highly advise that you do some suspension work first. The 4.10 will create massive wheel spin and possible some wheel hop. I would replace your LCA, Panhard, and Torque first. I used Spohn for LCA and Panhard www.spohn.net and have an edelbrock torque arm. Once you do that if you have an M6 your also gonna want to change the shifter. Your car is going to wind up really fast with the new gears and you don't want to miss a shift. Ditto on what Jake said about your tire size. Do a search and you'll find a rear gear calculator that will show you the effect tire diameter has on your final drive ratio. This is just you 2 cents worth.

Yeah stock 3:73's. No such animal. If you meant 2:73's then it's is a big jump, and the difference will be more then noticable. Did they even put such high gears in the later model camaro's? I thought they just came 3:23's and 3:42's on the M6. Oh well... Even if you did have aftermarket 3:73's in the car and replaced them with 4:10's it will be a big difference.
I agree with the above people also, some type of suspension control, and defenitly a Torque converter, and tire size does make a big difference in overall ratio. I think the 4:10's are a really good choice, the 3:73's doesn't have that much kick, and anything lower then the 4:10's forget streetability.... Good Luck..

I guess I have 3:42 for the rear. I have the m6 for a transmission. I was not sure what is in it. Do you guys know how to decode the vin code. I wasnt sure if this told the gear ratio or not. What brand gears do you guys use. I was planning on getting the kit from thunder racing with the strange gears. Any suggestions? I am also going to be getting the lg motorsports traction package.

Thanks,

I used the Thunder Racing kit as well but choose the Motive gears. The biggest piece of advice i can offer is make sure that whomever does your rear has done 4th generation F-body rears before. There are a few tricks to getting the gears into our rears.

4.10s are a must I have yet to do the suspension work. I plan on it though.

No need to decode your VIN you have 3.42's. No M6 LS1 car came with anything other than 3.42's

Yep, all M6's came with 3.42's.
If you really want to though, the RPO codes on the inside of your driver's door will have a GU6 code to indicate 3.42's.

4.10's are wonderful gears compared to 3.42's. Much better off the line feel, although on the strip w/o DR's, you probably won't hook (I couldn't get a better then a high 2.3 60' after the 4.10's and that was basically a launch off idle that would spin). 6th gear is a lot more usable too. They are weaker then 3.42's though, I will warn you. I already busted a set (that's why I went 12 bolt), but that could have been an improper install. Make sure the person knows what they're doing as AZ28driver said. The ring gear needs to be machined slightly to fit in the stock rear.

4.10's were one of the best mods I made. When the car was stock with some ET streets, I felt the car was capable of 12.70's in the quarter. For what it's worth, that setup enabled me to best a bunch of mid 12 sec cars on the street easily. I wish that I could have made a pass down the track with the way the car was. I def would recommend a rear upgrade!!! If I kept the car in that form, I would have destroyed my stock rear with a little more abuse.

I had 4.10s before the pinion shaved its teeth off. They were alot of fun to play with, but im not sure how much performance they give on a realatively stock car because of the limited traction with them, on street tires you basically have to take off at idle. My friend had stock gears and the exact same power as me, I would destroy him off the line by like 3 cars, then we would catch up and we would be dead even at the finish line. 3rd and 4th gear become really boring.
I hear good things about 3.73 but I havent had a chance to try them.
