Default rearend ratios @ 60... help me compile info

Thinking about a new rear end for my 6 speed and wondering if I should change the gear ratio or not. This may have been covered but I searched and didn't find what I wanted to know, so here the question. I want to know the engine RPM at 60mph in 6th gear for all the different gear sets, 4.56's, 4.11's, 3.73's, 3.43's so on and so forth.

what size tire do you run? it makes a diffrence..

RPM @ 60 MPH

w/ 3.42's and a 26" tire (a hair taller than a 275 nitto) barely over 1300

3.73 ~1450
4.10 ~1600
4.30 ~1680
4.56 ~1780

now, 27's & 28's are a diffrent story. should drop these numbers down the taller tire you fit.

dont have too much fun..

opps, sorry I forgot about the tire size.... I am still running the OEM goodyears 275/40/17's I think. What is the stock gear in the rear end for a 2002 WS6?

btw: I have never had too much fun!

Thanks for the info and esp the website. It explained everything crystal clear.

why are you concerned specifically about 60 mph specificaly? most speed limits are 70 mph.

You can get all the speed and rpm info by using this calculator.

I like that calc page but another side-by-side user friendly version is here:

Here in the mountians of NC its 45 to 55. Unless your in town of course, then it drops to 35. With the stock rearend, tranny and tires 6th gear is almost usless on most of these hills unless you just plain don't respect the speed limits.

It would be cool if I could get an old school add-on overdrive and rework the gears in it to actually gear down the tranny while I was here in the mountains and still give me the stock gearing for the few times I get to strech her legs on the interstate. It would be like having a 12 speed

Anyone know if this could happen?

If you're not changing tire sizes, it's easy.

If you have the stock gearing for your M6 (3.42), then the RPM at any MPH will be different by the ratio of the new gear to your old gear. For example, 1500 at 60 MPH for 3.42s would be 1500 * (4.10/3.42) ~ 1800 RPM for the 4.10s.

You can figure every gear change like that.

Anyone know if there is a place that makes an underdrive for the T-56? I would like to keep the current rearend ratio (after getting a moser or strange of course) but still be able to acheive the performance that a 3.73 or 4.10 rear would give me in an otherwise stock WS6.

I have found several companys that make the under/over drive add ons but none for the T-56 6-speed.... It would be nice to flip a switch and have the underdrive switch to a different ratio (close to what a 4.10 rear end would give for the final drive ratio) and have it keep that ratio until I turn the switch off again. Most of the ones I have seen change back to the orignial setting once the clutch is depressed and you change gears. Any ideas guys?
