Default Question about the 10 bolt.

I am going to be picking up my very first LS1 this weekend and I am VERY worried about the stock 10 bolt. I have heard so many bad stories about these things and every sig I look at it lists that they have a 12 bolt or 9".

What could I do to make it last longer? Like if I wanna race by buddies Cobra can I get on the highway and go from a roll? Will it be easier if I punch it after I am rolling vs slam 1st to 2nd? What if I slam 3rd to 4th vs 1st to 2nd?

Just looking for some ideas so im not 2500 bucks in the hole....

Thanks!

M

Dont launch it or take it to the track is probably a good place to start.

I wasn't really planning on taking it to the track until I got a new rear end. Launching as in 3 grand drops?

Yes, rolls would be much easier on it... but you can still grenade it on a roll too.

You won't break it from a roll unless there's already something wrong with it. I just make sure I'm good on fluid and I've launched both of my F-bodies countless times on drag radials, both M6 cars, averaging 1.9ish 60's and haven't broken anything.

You are most likely in the clear anywhere besides a launch at the track, although I do know there are people who have broken them on the street, most likeley something was already wrong with them...

I have cut 1.79's on a 10 bolt through a 6 speed and 1.49s through an auto.

Don't worry about it and have fun.....

I have seen stock HP 6 speed cars blow out the rearend. Luck of the draw I guess?

I didn't wait for it to happen, I got a 9" installed with only 38,000 miles on the odometer. I never have to worry again.

I cant wait to just run through the gears when I get the thing. I was thinking about getting a spare 10 bolt until I can save enough for a 9". Just in case. You never know.

I have a 98 A4 with 119000 miles on it and about 325 HP. I've never had a prob, although the A4s w/2:73 are the least likely to go. I have talked to a bunch of owners (M6 and A4) and have not heard the horror stories that I have read here. It is really a matter of how much torque you put out and how you apply it. If you are planning on running 12's, like me, then I think you will be fine. I plan on building my motor to about 425 HP, which is weak compared to many members. At that point, I believe that I will be on the edge of trouble, but will stay the course until it lets go. You have to think about what it is you are planning on doing with your car and how much $ you want to spend. What a 650 HP car does to a rear end at the strip is not the same as what you will do with 400 hp on street tires.

Yea, most will survive the street unless you are pushing some serious power and running radials everywhere. But they hold up well with street tires, even on the track. But put some sticky tires then you're taking a chance. But unfortunately there are always those that break on bald street tires while spinning (like mine) and then those that can cut 1.6 60's consistently and not break. But the average 10 bolt will last on the street but not long with m/t's
