35 spline gun drilled axles here with star flanges on them (lighter than drilled flanges). the only con is the price

Besides the point that they are lighter, are they stronger as well or weaker?

I've been told that a general rule of thumb with gun drilled axles is that they will be slightly weaker, so go with a spline count that is 1 step up from what you need with non-gun drilled. So 35 gun drilled is most likely good enough for 99% of the f-bodies

I talked a good bit with the guys at Moser before deciding to go with the gun drilled axles. They finally conviced me that there is practically NO loss of strength. The hardened metal is on the outside and that's where most of the strain is placed. Think of the middle as just softer filler metal that really doesn't do much.

From what I understand the center never really hardens enough to gain any strength like you stated. Its pretty much filler. I have this in my 9" and also have the axles star flanged where only the area around the studs is present. Haven't got many miles on the setup but no problems thus far.

How much lighter are gun drilled axles? And what are star flanges?

5-7 lbs per side depending on the axle in question.

"and also have the axles star flanged where only the area around the studs is present."

I think this pretty much sums up what the star flanged axles are. I have a set to go in my '00. Instead of having metal in a complete circle (the part where the studs go) like stock axles, the metal is in a star shape. There is only metal going out to the studs but not inbetween where it's not needed. Hence, less weight.

I thought gun drilled 35 splines were only good for light weight cars...less than 1850#'s, that is what Strange says. They recommended a 40 spline for my Mustang. Might look into that.

Do what?!? You sure that's what they said? If someone told you that at Strange then they don't need to be answering the phone (maybe someone's kid messin' around?) 35 splines only good for 1850 lb cars???

BTW, all of my 9 second runs were made with 31 spline axles. 40s would be good for...well, I don't know HOW fast you'd have to go to break 'em but it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY faster than any of us will be going anytime soon.
