Default 10 bolt posi question...

I have a 98 Formula with 2.73s. The posi isnt working and I want to go to a steeper gear. I found a 3.42 rear end for $50. But it has a bad spider gear. It is out of a 2000 ss.

What kind of posi do I have in my 98 Firebird? Does my 2.73 rear end have the same spider gears, or is it a different type of posi?

Thanks for the help.

Ok, i am pretty sure my 98 has a auburn. So if the 3.42 rear end has spider gears, it has to be an auburn also.

Will spider gears out of a 2 series fit in a 3 series carrier?????

I thought I've read before the newer cars had a different limited slip. I'm not too sure, you'll have to wait for a more knowledgeable person to chime in

There are different...I found this out the other day when I removed the covers. 98 vs 99 and up.

This guy was selling an auburn rear out of a 2000 ss, so I dont think that is correct. I dont think any 98+ f bodys came with eaton stock.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/lsx-parts-sale/900734-fs-rear-end-3-42-s-auburn-3k-mi.html

They are either auburn friction type, or torsen worm gear type.

Anyone else know...

You are correct. The SSes (and Firehawks as well, I believe) were offered from SLP with the option of an Auburn (Pro??) instead of the stock Torsen T2.
'99 and up, Torsen T2 stock.
