As the title states, have 3.90 gears ready to go in from 3.42, just working on a HP Tuner's deal so I can do the gear change in PCM myself.
I finish the 1/4 at 108-109mph. Best time is a 12.9, but repeating this is a pain in the ***, I can get 13.0-13.2 once the tires are hot quite consistently. Traction is crap at the tracks around here. Little prep, spin most of 1st, chirp 1-2 and 2-3.
I'm looking to stay in the 12.xx range for times and wondering if the change is worth it (HP Tuners + gear install is at least a good $800 investment). Triple that amount and I can go m9, but STILL need HP Tuners, so it's going to quadruple that which I don't have on hand at the moment.
Or should I go heads (stock 98 heads) since I'm already cammed and just power my way into 12's consistently? I can justify a bump in spending to say $1500 for heads, not $3k for a rear... though power may finally break the poor 10 bolt... tough call huh?

Don't take the 10 bolt plunge. I hammered my 3.42's since birth and no break, no whine with 400 rwhp. 2 weeks ago I had a guy install 3.90's they worked fine and quiet for 500 miles then whined like hell as soon as I floored it once. Back to the shop.... Shop says its the gears, gear guy says its the shop. All the while I'm out of $650. Then, don't ask why I agreed to allow the guy put in another set for $400 and a guarantee for free replacement if they whine. Just went to pick it up and they whine while coasting. My car is in the air again. Be happy with the 10 bolt.till it breaks then buy something bigger or another 10 bolt.

You'r car sounds like mine.12.9 @ 108-109 with 3.42's.With wheel spin in 1-3 and running on drag tires. You have to do a John Force burn out to get them to grip. I put in 3.73's well same #'s but no whine. But for street they are faster. I do have a set of 4.11's I may put in, but it's not a big jump in gear so i might not feel it.And an extra $400. is not justifiable.I say stay with you'r 10 bolt untill you break it. But for now save the money for a 9'' or a 12''.

I swore to myself that with my 4th gen I would just run it till it breaks, but with it so close to staying consistent in the 12's, I'm just looking at options that could keep it there.
I got the gears for a good price and they are low mileage. Honestly if I could swing a good deal on some used heads, I'd go heads in a heartbeat. 10 bolt was holding up against 4k clutch dumps, but as stated, no traction and due to prep and weather just not possible to get them warm those days I went.
