But wouldn't you want to be able to change your fluid (more often) without taking the stock cover off to do so?

If you hook up good on a stock 10 bolt, I'd venture the lifespan of the rear will shorten up quite a bit too. I've never worried about mine. I do 2-3 passes a year and have half-bald street tires. I wheel hop the first pass and spin the rest unless I ease into the gas to let it roll first.
I'm almost scared to buy Nittos when I replace them :P

Did you get your oil problem figured out? I voted yes, but hell I have a six speed with a 12 bolt. I'm just one of those guys that thinks every little bit helps. Are you going to buy new tires before the track closes this year?

Yeah i got the oil problem figured out. I had a racing oil, conventional 10-30 and GM EOS (engine oil supplement) in there and I think it was slipping past the rings. I changed it to straight 30w and didn't have the problem at all. I guess the rings weren't seated well enough yet for that combo. after about 150 miles i put regular 10-30 in and still no problems yet. I also got the gauge, radio, and starting problem fixed! that was causing a lot of problems that was really pissing me off!! thank God it was easy to fix.

I have a JEG'S Aluminum differential cover on my 02 which was transferred from my 99 which was originally tranferred from my 94.
The 94 Z28 had an A4 with Fairbanks billet servo (made firm shifts 1-2 & 3-4) SLP 2800 stall, OEM diff, Motive 3.73's and multiple track passes with over 115k+ miles. Sold it and then it went to the 99 Z28 M6/Z06 clutch set up with over 60k miles and lots of hard shifts (B&M Ripper) with OEM 3.42's before a woman totaled it. I then transferred it to my 02 Z28 A4 with current mods and over 80k miles.
I have never had any issues with the differential, gears or axles.
When I install it I always pre-loaded the caps and used the right lube and GM Friction Modifier.
If you don't plan on upgrading to a new rear or making huge HP it makes for a solid piece of support, cooler oil and easier oil changes.

You will be absolutely fine w/out the girdle. What you have to remember on an automatic car is our cars preload the drivetrain when you hold the RPM's at the tree, they aren't shocked like the M6's shock their rear ends. I went 11.6's w/a 1.60 60' in my old H/C 01 T/A w/100k on the rear end, there is another local guy that has cut 1.4's on the juice in his A4, its a whole different ball game compared to M6's.

Currie carries them for their Dana 60, GM 12 bolt & 8.8 Ford.
Strange carries them for their GM 10 bolt, 12 bolt and Ford 8.8
As a matter of fact, in most cases, they are an upgrade option.

I guess you can chock it up to driving habit and OEM tolerance. I still think the cover adds to some structural integrity. Hey, with a rear as weak as some say, it's added insurance IMHO. Three 4th gens and three rears later and all with different configurations they all held up.

I got a TA cover used for $100 and my rear held together for 198,000 kms before it broke. Had somewhere between 150-200 Drag passes on the M6 and at least a dozen Auto-X and multiple burnouts plus spirited street driving.
I changed my oil a total of 4 or 5 times and for me it was worth it just for that to have the drain plug built in on the back instead of making that big mess by unbolting all of the stock one to dump the oil.
When my rear did break the caps were still held in place but the ring gear snapped in the center where the drivers axle goes thru it. I also figure having the cap allowed me to drive the car home like that and saved me having to get towed.
I say its worth it.

Mine's gone 140k now and has a 9 inch in the wings ready to go in, previous rears on other f-bodies lasted 200k, so I've had decent luck. Note none ever broke at track, only during normal driving which wasn't too shocking given the mileage on the rears and the abuse at track.
Some are unlucky in the sense that the first 4k clutch dump wrecks em. Min'e done a few 4k on nitto's and survived. What killed it recently. A parking garage of ALL left turns. HAH killed the Auburn posi in it, oh well.
Save the cash for a 9inch if m6, or a 12 bolt if auto, not worth investing on a 10 bolt that hasn't broken yet.
