The M5, a 4012lb vechicle with 500 HP, and 483 ft-lbs of torque, goes 0-60 in 4.6 secs
A Merc CLk 550 with 382 HP, 391 ft-lbs and weighing 3720 lbs goes 0-60 in 5.1 seconds
The Pontiac G8 GXP (very close kin to the Camaro) with 415 HP/Tq is considered to be an excellent performer as well, weighs 4050 lbs. 0-60 in 4.6 seconds (faster than the Camaro?)
Weight can be countered with a great suspension, which all of them have. I know I probably should have used quarter mile times, but 0-60 is easier to find, and doesn't very as much
Both are considered to be excellent handling cars

You don't think they spent the last 7-8 years JUST designing the Camaro, do you? Designing a car starts years before it's released. GM started work back in 2005, and has made serious changes since then.
Can you find another 30K (1SS, almost no options) car that can trap at 111 mph with a **** driver? The SS is a great car. People complain about it's weight a bit too much. Sure, it weighs around 3900lbs. Who cares? The M3 weighs just as much! It's not the weight of the car that makes the car - it's the engineering. The engine, the tranny, and the independent suspension.
Compare the BRAND NEW GT to the SS, and the SS blows away the stang in just about every category. Hell, the cost is almost identical, too. Compare it to the over priced Challenger, and you get the same result.

Who cares? Alot of people. The new one IS a fat pig! With all the plastic in these cars there is NO excuse for a 3900+ pound Camaro, especially with aluminum engines and transmissions. They could start by dropping that heavy IRS and those overweight 20 inch wheels! You should try mounting and balancing those things. Good grief. There is no reason why a V8 Camaro should weigh over 3500 lbs. This thing should be turning mid 12's on the factory tires.

While I agree the car is way too heavy, I don't know why anyone would want a solid axle in this car. If all you care about is strait line speed you can buy a fox body for cheap and throw an LS1 in it. IRS is FAR superior setup for a performance car giving much better suspension geometry and control while also giving a better ride. As far as the plastic comment, I'm not sure if you noticed but this is a large steel car, for its size the weight is where I would expect it to be (but not where I'd like it to be).

All you guys complaining about the weight need to realize one main thing.
This is a mass produced vehicle meant for the public. With the way that GM is right now, they can't afford to have anything less than state-of-the art safety features that will give the car a 5-star crash test rating. All these features that keep you alive in case of a crash are what make the car that much heavier.
If you are looking for a stripper car weighing much less to take to a drag strip, then I believe the current car market is not where you should be looking. ('cept for Vette).

The manual had a horrific launch and still ran 13.0!!!The 60' killed it's time. If I launched like than on the track with my mods I would no doubt be in the high 12's. But what can you expect from a 35 degree day. I probably would be able to hook with my ET streets. A 111 trap is pretty damn good in my opinion given it's weight. My friend's bolt on 99 Formula was trapping 109 at 12.3. It definately has potential. I am sure we will see a mid 12 second pass (manual) with a good driver and a high 12 second pass with the auto under ideal weather conditions. I am not going to base my opinion on one pass on the street.

How about your get the car 1st before you start internet racing.
FYI: If it"s anything less than a TVS 2300 on your FUTURE Camaro , you're wasting your time.
#115
maybe you should shut up before i take you to school again. I am the bus driver on your shortbus of life.
Germans what?
#117
Why dont you and the TVS2300 get a room? Maybe because, like an expensive hooker, you still do NOT know the price for all the bells and whistles, until after the show is over. Then you will wonder WTF batman.
#118
How about the the used C5's for $13k and used C6's in the 20's and both weigh around around 3200lbs.
Don't say I'm dreaming. I KNOW people/friends that have already purchased those cars for those prices.

In response to your posts (which made me laugh )
I'd date a Turbo Tehnologies TTi-X system.
But, I'd probably marry the practical choice of a (ECS) East Coast Supercharger's Paxton Novi system.
As far as the prices and surprises, this isn't my first rodeo.

Let's really look at some numbers here. Everyone keeps saying that its competitors are fat now too, let's see what Car and Driver says about these cars weights.
Chevrolet Camaro (V6) = 3807
Pontiac Solstice GXP Targa = 3080
Pontiac G6 = 3415
Honda Accord Coupe = 3283
Nissan 370Z = 3360
BMW 135i =3380
BMW M3 = 3700
Nissan Altima Coupe = 3076
Mustang (V6) = 3336
Porsche 911 = 3320
Infiniti G37 = 3717
Wow it is a fatty. The good news is that even the V6 will outrun half the cars on that list, so I guess it's like a really fast linebacker?
