2009 Camaro Weight
GTO weighs 3725, CTS-V is 3850.
Keep in mind both of those cars have a bunch of heavy equipment not needed in Camaro.
My '01 Z28 was 3567lbs stock, so I'm fine with the 5th Gen weighing 3600.
But of course, lighter is always gooder.
Unfortunatly, GM will not build a Camaro like this.
Look at the gen1 Viper. After a few years, the "hardcore" people had already bought thier Vipers, and sales started to drop. Then the people who wanted the Viper as a "status symbol", were crying about the "lack of convenience". DC had to give them all the supposed "goodies" that, to me at least, are a waste on money an weight.

Thats just what GM needs to do, make another car that is undesireable to the masses just so a small group of enthusiasts will be happy. It would just be another suicide for the camaro if it does not appeal to a broad spectrum, esp. women. If you want a drag car/road warrior have some creativity and build your own, dont rely on a brand new vehicle with a factory warranty and govt. regulations to meet your needs. I'll take 400+ HP, leather seats, power everything, and a cold *** ac system
I meant you should be able to option one in this manner, not make them all like this. I agree that most of these Maros will not be as race driven as I described because most of the nation wants a girly car, such as you described. I just want an option box.
Yeah, Chevy could make a Camaro that weighs 3100 lbs. But it would incorporate Corvette-like technology and a Corvette price tag -- not the stuff a true Camaro is made of. Bottom line is that today's cars handle better, accelerate better, and stop better than those of the past -- despite being saddled with more weight than ever.
I can almost guarantee that however Chevy decides to build the Camaro, it'll be a blast to drive. And I really do sense that those at Chevy have learned their lessons from the last generation of F-body.

I agree it would be nice to have a lighter car, but guys they'll charge more... Forget it... Just be thankful they're considering it again!
Government safety regulation may dictate that it would need reinforcments to withstand offset crashes, side impacts and rollovers. That adds weight.
What will also matter is what platform it's based on. If it's based on the current CTS or the next Holden Commodore, don't expect it to weight under 3,500lbs.
I wouldn't be surprised if it weighs in fairly close to the GTO or a little less. Similar to the Mustang which is based on the Jaguar S-Type.
I don't know what the target is for the new camaro, but if they want to legitimatley compete with the mustang, they need to keep the car under $30K. There aren't too many cars in that price range that I know of that come with tons of heavy equip like heated seats and nav systems.
JustAnIlluzion- I feel you. I would much rather lose 10lbs off of my own carcus than rip out sound deadening material or other equip.
