half those mustang numbers are 16 yr old girls getting their first car from mommy and daddy - an 05 v6 mustang! the new camaro may replace that.

maybe they should just concentrate on building the car right, marketing it right and not being CHEAP with everything......instead of just looking on how many they will sell...if they do this all, they will sell...but NOOOOOOO.....GM as usual wants to throw numbers around before anything is put out there because they want to see how much many they can save cutting corners....Typical..........

I'm thinking GM might offer two V6s. Remember, they have both the 3.6 and the 3.9L that would both handily owb the Mustangs Explorer transplant. The four cylinder wouldn't be that bad of an idea, but the Ecotec is still a little too enemic...

What GM should do is offer that spiffy new Vortec I-5 that comes in the Canyons. That would have plenty of Torque for most people, and lower the base models price. Also, i'd love to see that Isuzu I-6 4.2L in the camaro.

Hopefully GM gives us a choice between the 5.3L, LS2, and LS7 later on...

The more choices they offer, the more expensive the car will be. A single V6 (3.9L)and max of 2 V8's (LS2/LS7) should be enough. They have to keep it affordable or 100K units will never happen.

If an I4 is acceptable in terms of HP and Torque, drop down to a Cobalt where the 500lb weight penalty for a sports-oriented chassis (eg, Camaro) won't bother you.

I too believe GM will go with one V6 and two V8s.

new Vortec I-5...Interesting idea for dropping the base price. What are the preformance figures and dimensions for that engine? I believe an I6 would be too long to get into the engine bay, although it does look rather spacious.

I hope that GM offers all three of its V8's. They could make a really cheap V8 with that 5.3 and sell it at like 22-23 thousand...severally undercutting the price of a Stang GT. Plus insurance would be cheaper on a 300 HP car instead of a 400 HP car. And markering would be good. Take your pic...300,400,500.

220 HP/225 TQ

In a Crew cab 4x4 Z71 Colorado it's a dog, but in a 2WD Ext cab, it runs pretty decent

The I5 would run great in a cheap camaro and lower the price of that engine and the Colorado to boot...Then offer a 250 HP V6, 300 HP 5.3, and on and on the list goes on...

That's pretty decent torque for an inline. I wonder if it sounds like a 5-cyl Audi? Those can be made to sound a little mean with an intake and exhaust. It could work if done right--the engine bay on the 5th gen look long enough.

An line 6 would perhaps fit in the new camaro...thus, I am sure that the inline 5 would fit. The pics of the engine bay on the concept make the bay look cavernous. I hope that the new camaro is much smaller though!!!

Right, that's what I was thinking! The engine and transmissions could be sourced directly from the Colorado/Canyon assembly lines. Seeing as the engines are more than likely cheaper to produce than GM's "high-feature" V6s, I think it would be a fairly shrewd business decision. Plus, that I-5 would be able to compete on level with the Mustang's 4.0L, AND get better gas mileage IIRC. I really think GM should consider putting the 5.3L in the lineup, instead of jumping straight to the LS2. The 5.3L would be a very good match for Ford's 4.6L power-wise, and already has the cylinder shut-off technology to keep fuel economy up. As much as I like those new 3.6/3.9L V6s, I don't think they would be the best choice for keeping costs down.

As for what cars the engines go in:

1. I5 or V6 in Sport Coupe or LT
2. I5 or 5.3L in RS or LTZ
3. LS2 in Z/28
4. LS7 in SS

I think a new gen sbc would be a better V8 engine. I think the LS7 or something of that caliber should be available for a highend "richboy" ZL1 option. But rather than have a Z28/SS dispute I think there should just be a single v8 regular option with a slew of options and upgrades to personalize a car. For example offering a special shifter/gfx/halogen/hid/rims/sport exhaust/sport intake/rear gears/...just stuff that isn't so z28 or ss or 1LE etc. Make them fully blendable and in a way such that they can be done at dealerships rather than at the factory.

The reason I like this is so that it might be possible for a person to get a base V8 car for low 20's, a nice v8 car for 25-30k or so all the while another can spend 35k+ or so for a top notch performer (and GM needs to get over the vette heirarchy bullshit) and then have a uber collectible ZL1 for whatever price.
