so the fastest vehicle in its class being called and SS is watered down? I guess an SUV that "only" runs mid 13s is watered down too?

btw, chinese democracy is always going to be released "next year", guns & roses was overplayed 15 years ago, and Axl is a spoiled little girl.

I'm sure it will be the SS. It would be cool if the cars would be differant like with the first gens. Not couse I own a Z28 because I do wish I had an SS, but the Z28 was kinda special. Not that the big block SS cars were not. But the first gen Z28's didnt share a engine with any other GM car and I think thats cool. Also like said above chevy plasterd SS on everything, and just like how a Z06 can only be a Corvette a Z28 can only be a Camaro. Plus I think it would be a good idea if they had a badgless base V8 car.

SS has been watered down?

The only SS cars Chevy has out right now are the:
Impala SS - 303 HP
Monte Carlo SS- 303 HP
Cobalt SS 173 HP (or 205 horses supercharged)
Malibu SS (already discontinued) 240 HP

Ok so the Cobalt isn't something to be overly proud of, but all these cars can pick up well, and are formidable. They aren't super cars, true, but they perform well for their class, and that is what Chevy wants.

When the 2009 Camaro SS and Corvette SS roll in 2009-2010, you won't be complaining about the watered down SS anymore

that would be tight but not to get down on you they haven't made the ls1 in about 2 years in any vehicle. now they are replacing the ls2 with the ls3 also. but oh well they can probably have like the ls4 in place of that ls1, ls3 in place of the ls2. then have the ls7 or the new ls9 in a Zl1 or whatever as almost a racecar.

what will be good is if you can have a strip model to a fully loaded 1 so the camaro can be great to everybody: draggers, students, everybody could have it the way they like it.

i don't see how someone couldn't be proud of the cobalt ss (supercharged that is, that should have been the only ss cobalt), it beat the corvette ls2 z51 around a racetrack by 2 seconds according to motor trend in 2005.

I could be wrong but I think the whole thing worked like this pretty much since the beginning:

Chevy:

Base Camaro: V6
Rally Sport (RS): V6 or V8 with appearance package
Z28: Production code for V8 camaro with suspension upgrades (wheels/tires too)
1LE: Option code (not a model) for a Z28 with race ready suspension
Super Sport (SS): Z28 car with upgraded suspension, higher flywheel HP, and an appearance package
ZL1: Option code (not a model - I think, not totally positive about this one but pretty sure) for 427ci engine Camaro in 1969 only (Not to be confused with the GMMG Berger ZL1's which are technically a tribute car not a factory option like it was in 1969) .

Pontiac:

Firebird = Base Camaro
Formula = RS
Trans Am - Z28
WS6 = 1LE
Firehawk=SS

Sorry pontiac no ZL1 comparison that I'm aware of -

Also, I think it's pretty close to that no matter what model you look at. Remeber the Cavalier had a Z24, the Berreta a Z26, Corvette a Z06. Also if the "Z" nomenclature were to be top of the line then why does Chevy occasionally create a "Chevy SS" concept car, would itn't it be a "Chevy Z" if that represented it's total package performance model?

SS = Tops! It always has and always will, I can't believe this thread has lasted this long and I can't believe there are actually 108 people that voted for Z28 to be top model.

Oh and one more thing, if every other car company can slap a GT or SRT on everything they make, why the hell can't the General drop an SS on an F'n cobalt if he wants to?

Pheww sorry, had to get that off my chest.

Oh yea, no frickin' idea what the hell a Berlinetta was!

Maybe just scrap the SS and Z28. The SS has been applied to so many cars like the Impala, Trailblazer, and Monte that the SS really doesnt mean much. Really now, the Impala and Monte are FRONT WHEEL DRIVE!! And the Z28 is just a RPO code. I say its time for a new RPO code on the side like Z-whatever the hell it comes up to. Theres been a 6 year plus lag in the Camaro producton which has never been taken place so maybe they should come back with something ALL NEW, that sets a new precident. Maybe???

Honestly I think they need to make a plain V8 and have the Z28 and SS packages separate
from each other. Like this:
base V8
Z28- more of a track suspension setup for autocross and road racing
SS- more interior options and setup more for straight-line performance

The Z28 package would be a "check one box, this is what you get " type deal where you
were limited in what was available with that option. Six-speed only, better brakes, heavier
duty package for cooling and steering. Power windows, locks, and CD player being the
only interior options with cloth.

Default name that camaro

I think the base car should be a Camaro (economy v6 with sport car styling)
The mid level performance car a Z/28 ( similar to the camaro but with a higher horsepower engine and better handling )
The high horse low optioned car the SS( SS avalible with a engine/trans/differential package designed for drag racing making around 500hp and a drivetrain that will take it unlike the junk 10 bolt that they put iinto the previous models and no independant rear suspension)
and the high horse high optioned car a SS/RS (SS/RS should have everything avalible to it and a special engine/trans/differential/suspension package like a touring car on steroids something capable of making around 500hp and able to put it to the ground)

I think it should be the ss to help regain the integrity of the ss name that has been slapped on everything lately

If you guys have noticed lately, the Vette is the only Chevy that sports a "Z" badge, everything else carries the SS if anything

Does it really matter? Is an emblem going to change anything?

We, actually have no say so whatsoever in what to call it. It's GM's decision.

I would love to see it called Z/28 or SS, but honestly, if it has an LS7, they could call it the "Super Mullet Machine" and I would buy it anyway, hell, GM could put a badge on it with a little guy with a mullet flashing the Rock On devil horns and I'd drive it.
