Umm.. Do you remember the 69 ZL-1 Camaro? Never a Pontiac that could carry it's jock strap much less keep up with it.

You need to check your times, a ZL-1 was much faster than that. With slicks they were 11 second cars easy. Do a little math, 370hp heavier car vs 500+ hp in a much lighter car.

Im a die hard Pontiac guy, but if you guys really want to take a good look at 60s-70s muscle, remember ALL the competetors. Everyones factory hot rod competed with each other too close to call, much because of the limitation on tire technology back then. Ford had 427s in alot of stuff, Thunderbolts, Marauders, and some of them were OHCs. Pontiac had the 421 Goats 400 Birds, the 400's had the formidible RAV. (Ive seen a stocker 69 T/A hand a stocker Hemi Cuda its *** in a 1/4) and yes I was shocked. Chevy had all kinds of different off the wall crap. And lets not forget AMC shoehorning a 304/4spd in a Gremlin, and the 401 AMX, the sick little 2 seater. But all in all, Id have to say-and it all is credited to Mr Norm at Gran Spaulding Dodge-in the late 60's, and since he would put a 440 in just about ANYTHING, Mopar wins the battle. Mopar had the cool factor, nothing like dual quads that hung out on the fenderwells, and headers in the trunk of the car you just bought with nothing but a bench seat, colunm shifter, and a Hemi. I still love my birds though.

oh yeah, I know the 440 wasnt a hemi, I can probably list all sizes of the hemi from the I-6's to the famous 426, I was saying in general Mopar had some pretty kewl ****.I remember when I was 16 and I found a 352 RedRam Hemi in a boneyard in Mansfield.. They made them for 2 years I think in the mid 50's. They wanted $250 for it and it needed a crank pulley and it was ready to go, I still kick myself to this day.

the only thing that could keep up with the big block chevy's were the hemi's. if you really wanna get technical, during the late 50's zora arkus duntov was complaining that chrysler stole much of the 'hemi' design from chevrolet.
back then you could do anything to nearly any car, and they did. anyone ever hear of smokey eunic? he was all chevy for two simple reasons: heads flow like a mother, and the combination of compression and stroke was nearly perfect - to the point that companies like ford, nissan, and especially chrysler copy.

oh yeah, you cant use 1/4 mile times back then from manufacturers. tire tech was so bad you could easily do a burnout in a lawnmower motor.

lol 400/455 pontiacs were turds. The 455 Poncho was the heaviest and the weakest of the 7.4L displacement GM line. 455 Buick was the best, followed by the 454 BBC, and 455 Olds. Modified cars are completely irrelevent to the arguement. I could say civics are badass cause there's a race one going single digits. GTOs were what they were, GM dropped them in the 70s, unlike the Camaro.

We Pontiac guys hate to hear that, but I guess if your comparing them all, your right, but I wouldnt necessarily call 480 ftlb @3600rpm a turd, now would we. And I do have to mention, in a good rebuilt with minor upgrades, its hard not to get 500hp and 600 ftlbs out of my little indian. The Buick V8 is a badass, and it wieghed 150lbs less that the Chevy, and Ive NEVER heard a motor take a cam like a Buick can. I found a great site that compares alot of engines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V8_engine scroll down to the bottom of the page and youll find other big motors.

What new GTO? I really dont think there will be one. Signs are pointing to no. There is no work floating around that is close to legit, nothing in any car mag. I remember months before GM revieled the Camaro there were pix out of it floating on the net the GM had a fit over. GM registered the Firebired name (supposley did that)( not saying there is going to be a Firebired either). IF there was going to be a 09/10 GTO I really think we would have seen/ heard a lot more information that is Firm. IF they are coming out with it they are keeping a tighter lid on it than the Camaro and there was much Hype about wanting the Camaro back and now it is.

From what i have seen of the 06's i am not impressed.
Also from what i have herd the 09's wont look much better.
I mean look at the camero, mustang and challanger.
They all have some sort of look from the 1st gen cars. But not the Gto.
My feelings if they cant do anything with the GTO like they did to do Camero then they should let it R.I.P.
I want the Trans Am back. From what i seen of the concepts it would be bad ***.

What the hell is a Camero? Tell me your not that dumb. I expect it on a Honda board, but not here.

I think GM is taking a long hard look at bringing the firebird back and letting the GTO die. One fact to support this is that GM never got the support from the older folks on the GTO like they had hoped. The firebird nameplate is more profitable because it has only been out of production for 4 years. There has been nothing on the GTO or the firebird but if the firebird does come back I will be it is a more upscale and expensive car than what it used to be. Regardless if it's fast and nice looking I'll be in line at the dealership.
