id say take the money that you would spend on an LS1 and put it into the LT1 and you'd have a faster car than the LS1 if you modded her up nice.

You need to wait if that what you want I was just in the same situation a few months ago. Its hard to do but stick it out. I wasn't to picky but i ended up with a 109xxx 98 with a good body for 5,000. But it is an LS. I've had both and i like the LS car way more.
Although in all fairness to the LT the fastest car i've ever rode in was a LT1 but It had alot done to it. It had 485 to the wheels.

Its not worth it, unless you would consider a gen 3 swap, I picked up a 2007 6.0 for $700 and I have it in the framerails of my truck now but I have no garage and its starting to get frigid here so its time to sit back, get the chainsaw out after work and go earn some extra money for spring because the wiring harness and mounts can get costly and be time down unless you have planned ahead and have everything before you take it off the road. that could be a wicked package though, if you have the money over time to build a decent stroker and a nice six speed

Since i own both i will chime in. My LS1 SS is a sweet *** vehicle but EVERYONE has one. No one has a tricked out LT1 anymore. Yes the LT1 is about 50rwhp behind an LS1 stock for stock but it doesn't take much to make up that ground. The biggest restriction of the LT1 is the stock exhaust manifolds. Removing them and going to long tube's and an O/R Y will yield close to 30rwhp.
Summit carry's all the item's you'll need.
Pacesetter LT's = 293.99
Pacesetter Y Pipe = 129.99
Jegs Catback = 250.99 Borla is 899.99 if you wanna go baller
Summit FIPK = 182.99
That combo there will get you to 290-295rwhp and 320+lbs of torque to the wheels. Add a nice lumpy cam and you'll be taking down LS1's. Get the LT1. You won't regret it.

I owned a 95 z28 A4 for 2 years and with only a cutout, airfoil, underdrive pulley, and cai It ran 13.8 never took it to the next level. The biggest problem with those engines is they are hard to work on and the opti-spark which I had to replace.

The problem with many LT1 owners is that they do a FIPK and a catback and be done with it. **** most LT1 owners only goto LS1's because they don't know how to properly build an LT1.
BTW - Never had an OPTI problem. Only replacing because i'm building a brand new engine.

I was going to put some extra money down for an ls1 last summer, but my 93 came up with 82k miles for 3800 bucks. It has a cc305 cam, and full boltons. I put a stall converter with a rebuilt transmission into it, and fixed some of the oil leaks last winter with some friends and it runs like a champ. I have taken down some ls1's in the area....I like the lt1, sounds much better than the ls1, deeper sound, and does some wicked burnouts. It is getting some gears, and some 02 ss rims this winter....its the underdog, most people think its slow

Consider what your goals are. Consider what they might be in the future. If you ever plan on doing a single hp mod to the car than you should go with the LS1. They respond better to mods like cams. Wish someone would have told me that. Better gas millage, slightly better rear end, improved brakes.
