Default Need advice on shipping a motor

Are there any forum vendors or reliable companies that can be recommended to ship a motor and transmission from Florida?

How much have you guys paid to have similar assemblies shipped out of state?

Thanks

I shipped a short block on a small pallet through fedex in 2004 for $100. I had to bring it to them. I wrapped it in plastic wrap really well then strapped it to the pallet. I shipped a tranny through UPS this year for $150; plastic tub from Wal Mart, as long as it is under 150 lbs.

I shipped a big block from Florida to California.
Went to a local business, asked if I could dig through their pallet pile, got one for free.
Drained the engine obviously, set it on the pallet with no wrap, bolted it down with four homemade brackets. Called freefreightquote or whatever it is and they emailed me a bill of lading. Took it to the fed ex freight terminal, handed them the paper, they forked it off, I drove away.

I'd wrap an LS1, you can buy wrap at walmart and many other places.
I selected a heavy duty pallet, you can even box it in if you want, but that all adds to the shipping weight.

I also shipped IIRC 10 or 12 transmission cores to a sponsor here, they called the freight company and it was the same deal, got emailed a bill of lading, went to the shipper, they forked it off, etc.

One did give me a tip...take tags with the two addresses on them and secure them to the stuff being shipped in case something falls loose.
Have a feeling a typed all this for nothing, thats nothing new.

Thank you Viper and 9000th for your replies. I still need a little more help. The internet quotes I received from both FedEx and UPS were considerably more than what you guys paid.

Is there a special classification that I should be using?

Has someone else used a different company? A company that specialize in shipping heavy automotive parts?

My father sells trucks for a living; his explanation is the cost of shipping went darn near 10x since 2002 due to insurance, cost of diesel etc.
