Default Not so happy thanksgiving

So i go to start my car to go to a friends place, and low and behold, it won't start. I figured it was the starter but i give it another try and after having the key turned for about 2 seconds or so, the engine catches but has a horrible idle. it bounces from 400 to 600. Now as you know, this is not at all normal for a cold idle (I usually cold idle around 900) so it bounces around that 400-600 range for awhile, then eventually jumps up to 900, and sits there for awhile, like it normally would. So i decided to see how it drives, and it doesn't seem slow on the throttle, plenty responsive, and no SES lights. But when i brake to a stop, the idle goes back to acting odd bouncing around 400-600. Also, the stereo no longer works, and the clock resets itself to 1:00... now it'll eject CD's but not play them. So i really have no idea where to begin I'll upload a video of it tomorrow and put a link, but any input is greatly appreciated.

When you initially tried to start it,did you get any dash lights/fuel pump prime,or turning over of the motor?

One day I went to cold start my car (95 LT1) and I got absolutely no response,no dash lights/chimes,no fuel pump prime, and the starter wouldn't turn.I tried holding it in the start position for about 5 seconds and then it magically came to life all of a sudden and started, but idled weird from 400-500rpm like you describe.Sounded like it was cammed.

It hasn't happened again to me since then (4 months ago).I was told in the LT1 section that it could possibly be the ignition switch acting up,or maybe the VATS....if it keeps happening you may want to look into those.

no the lights and everything turn on, but the engine takes a bit to catch and has that odd idle. i did have the flickering lights symptom of a bad alternator, but the gauge shows it's charging fine.

I'll probably disconnect and clean the battery terminals tomorrow, and make a video of this problem. it's extremely odd and i've never really seen anything like it...

Battery voltage is low and the first thing that goes is the no esstianls. Radio. Then the computers, that maybe why the computer is causing the rough idle. Put a Fluke on the battery and see what the voltage. 12.6 or higher

Battery problem for sure sometimes if the chassis ground goes bad it will cause similar problems check that too and the ground from the engine to the body this will cause the computer to search for ground and if its bad will cause crazy **** to happen like the cd player and idle because the BCM grounds the same way too.

My mom's Nissan was doing weird stuff when her battery died. I would jump it with my car and it would start immediately. When I disconnected the cables the car didn't idle as high, and would stall if I shocked the electrical system by turning on the high beams and blasting the A/C within a few seconds of each other. We put a new battery in it and boom, ran like new. If your car is an 02', its probably time. My mom's car is an 02' and the battery went a few months ago with 45k on the clock.

yeah the clock works, and the stereo will eject CD's but won't respond to changing the track or raising the volume. I haven't replaced the battery since i bought it in April, the car only has 45K miles so it's not hard to believe that's still the stock battery. Did they come with AC Delco's? I've been looking to get an Optima anyway

where are all the grounds u described? my gauges have been acting crazy and the battery goes dead after 20 min. i dont hear the fuel pump prime. what ground would be associated with the fuel pump?

Mason,

remember that optimas are tall batteries. Ive never seen under your hood, but make sure the hood wont close on top of it. That would be bad to say the least.
