Default Is this a good idea to do?
I have found a LS1 Complete engine from a 97 vette. It is at a junkyard and the vette got hit in the rear. The guy said he pulled the pan and inspected it for spun rod bearings and so forth. It has 53k miles on it. Is it a bad Idea to get a motor from a junkyard??? Thanks

I would buy it for a good price. I would still pull the pan and valve covers to check everything out, but I wouldn't be scared of it. I think these engines have the weak rod bolts, so you might want to step up to a ARP fastener.

Ok, i was told the blocks are thinner also, is that true.

what was he asking for the motors?? did it include trans,comp. and wiring?

I prefer to buy parts, especially drivetrain parts from wrecked cars. That way you know for sure that the car was running fine when it was wrecked, vs. an undamaged car thrown away from being too tired and worn. I also never do anything will rolled cars, since an EFI car will run upside down with a full tank, and starve the engine of oil.

He wanted $1500 long block, thats it.....He told me that the car had been sumerged. So thats iffy

in that case id probably wait.. i bought a wrecked 98 camaro z28 it was complete with 57xxx miles on it for $2400 not too long ago, so id look for a good deal they are out there..

Now, that's a deal. What about mine? Paid $700 for a 98 Z28 with 146k, just had a bad waterpump. Drove it for 1k miles and spun a rod bearing. (2 1/2 qts low) 135mph, wont hold up with no oil. But yeah, i will hold up

if your planning on doing a rebuild i would say go ahead. personally i would rebuild anything from a junk yard because its not worth the risk

I think 1500 is way too much. . . If you are looking at unverifiable parts, I would give 1500 for trans, motor and rear. . . come on, it is un-tested. . .

I guess so.....I don't think that motor is a good idea......1. Underwater 2. 97 Blocks are thinner 3. Seems fishy. 4. Bad Idea.......Also is there a VIN or some way to tell the milage of a motor?

for $1500 you could buy a newer 99+ LS based engine... your talking about a car thats been wreaked and submerged... screw that
