Default What is a ZL-1 Camaro?

I was at our local street race spot last night. A guy came up to me and was looking at my car. After talking for a while, he said he has a white ZL-1camaro. He even had pics of it. Looks very nice! I think it said 427 on the fender? Hard to tell from the pics. So what do you guys know about this car? How can I tell if it's a real zl-1?

If you're talking about the 69 ZL-1 Camaro, which I assume you aren't, it had the all aluminum 427 BBC in it. They were done as part of NHRA Super Stock rules. I believe there were 69 Camaro's and 2 Vette's that had this motors. They were by Dick Harrell and ordered through Gibbs.

There was also one built in 1993 on a "dare". It has a 572 Donovan alum engine. You can google that one, it sold at Barrett Jackson in 09

If you're talking about the late model, then it was done by GMMG. The engine depends on which Phase you got, some had factory cubic inch motors (I believe) and some had 427's. I think Phase 1 and 2 were factory cubes and Phase 3-5 were 427's, but I could be wrong on this. They are gorgeous cars and some (if not all) had a kick *** wide body. You can see some pictures and get some info on them here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/special-e...1-camaros.html

Edit: I just saw 1996formulafirebird's reply, that information is probably a lot more accurate than mine...

I'll be going to the guys house this weekend for pics. I know he owns many other cars. I've seen those before. He said the inside of the hood was signed by a few people. Not sure what that about. I think he said something about ZL-1 supercar.

Correct, I put nascar instead of NHRA and incorrect Camaro numbers....it's fixed now.

There was also rumored to be a third Corvette with this motor at an auto show. But the engine was painted to camoflauge the aluminum. Apparently one editor from Motor Trend, I think, caught it.

Of the late model cars, I believe the stage 2 and 3 both had the 427 inch C5R block. One was rated at either 450 or 475 and the stage 3 was rated in the 600 hp range. Tell that guy to bring his ZL1 to Monmouth Illinois the first weekend of August for the Fred Gibb cruise and show. There are usually at least a dozen of the originals and a few of the latest generation ZL1's on hand plus about a thousand other bits of american muscle from various eras.

Stage 1 was an LS6. Stage 2 was a head and cammed LS6. Stage 3 was the C5R 427. All were originated from B4C (Special Service Coupe) Camaros instead of Z28s. As time went on, a lot of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 cars went back to GMMG for a Stage 3 upgrade.

the ZL-1 is only the bad *** camaros on the street.

they range in price from $60k-$130K. You can tell because
(A) it will have a custom intake mani.
(B) it will have a brass plate on the rear hatch with some things on it
(C) it will have signatures with dates on the pass side, and some sigs on the driver sides
(D) some fenders have been flared (which I cant find a place to replicate).
(E) the bumper (Chin) comes out a little...

lol But to tell that its the real thing because badges can be purchased on ebay, look for A-C.

I would like to do a ZL-1 stage 1 replica because like most I dont have $60k for a camaro I can build without the GMMG guys touching it. lol
