Default Value of the 4th gen...

I have been looking at the prices of 4th gens. The range is incredible to say the least.

There are cars with 50k+ on them, asking for 10k-15k. Over what Kelly blue book rates them at.

Here is my question, what do you think will happen to the price/value when the Gen 5 hits the market?

Will people that have 10-15k laying around (since most banks wont loan money on older vehicles now) still buy a 4th gen at the inflated price or will they use that money as a down payment on a 5th gen?

My opinion is that people with that money laying around will go for the 5th gen and will see the price fall on the 4th gen.

Already the cars over 10k are not really selling unless its something really special.

I think the ones asking for all the money, may want to rethink the price if they truly want to sell the car.

Whats your opinion?

I agree with you. 10-15k is rediculas and deifently when the 5th gen hits the market I can see the price of the 4th gen Camaro's dropping but I think the price for the T/A's with remain basically the same.

Now lets say the gen 5 was on the lot, all the packages were released, no dealer mark up and maybe even rebates.

Would you take that 13k and buy the Firehawk or put the money down on a new Gen 5?

I would take the firehawk in a heartbeat. Way better platform for racing. If I was looking for a DD then I would pick up the new 5th gen, but that would mean payments, and a lot of people that have 10-13k laying around may not want ot have payments either and will continue to buy the nice T/A's and SS's

The going rate is whatever the bank will give, and that's based on KBB. Right now, my '99 with 125K is worth like $4,000-$5,000.

The going rate also includes half the cost of aftermarket parts, but without any labor factored.

The new Camaro won't hurt car's like mine, becuase if you're looking at buying aq $5,000 car, you're not looking at buying a $35,000 car. But, I'll tell you that the founder of this Web site, who no longer is here but is running another site that's better (can't tell you which because it's filtered), is selling his STUNNING stock Sunset Orange Metalic Formula Firehawk M6 with 11,000 miles for under $25,000. That's one of the most desirable F-Bodies on the entire market bar none. That tells you how much these cars are worth: next to nothing.

I agree, the cheaper cars wont be hurt at all.

I am buying a car, so it was between a Camaro and a Mustang.

I found both in the price range I wanted, I have had both. And know the pros and cons to either one.

I was just shocked at the money some people were asking for some of the cars and found myself thinking that some people are going to be in for an awakening between economy and the new Gen 5 hitting the streets. Just wondered what others though about it.

itll be a much better car in many ways. maybe not mpg but itll be faster, and handle MUCH better. so who cares about the weight?

but no not really. thats like saying with the zr1 will people put their $30k toward that. no, many will be financing to get the camaro, just like many people will finance to get a bird. theres a world of difference between $10-15k and 25-30, or thered be no such thing as a taurus.

I'm in the market for an F-body or a C-5. From what I've seen on this and other forums is that if a car is priced right it will sell quickly. However, if the seller is emotionally attached and prices a car at what he thinks it is worth and ignores the market then the car sits, sometimes for months. Anyone that makes a market based, fair offer is an idiot or a "low-baller". Check the post above me for a car priced at market value and purchased.

I saw a Craigslist ad yesterday for a 2000 C-5 coupe with 17k miles on it. The seller was asking $50K firm. Check over at the corvette forum and you can purchase a new C-6 for less than $43K!! Granted that's an extreme example but there are some that come close in the classifieds section here.

I've been looking for a car on and off now for several months. Some things that I've noticed is that some sellers think that their vehicles are worth some sort of premium. I'm willing to pay for a nice car, but the truth is, some of these cars are already 10 years old now, and it shows. However, there are definitely still good deals out there, and people who know how to price a car.

I agree with that.

Unfortunately, I dont seem to be having any real luck with Fbodys or Mustangs right now.

firehawk all the way. Its paid off. Cheaper, just as nice. And the way the economy is. . . anytime you can pay something off and have one less payment thats the way to go. I'm happy with what i have. And wouldn't have it ne other way.

There are lots of people who list the car for sale for what they want out of it. My WS6 is for sale for $10K, it's a clean 98 w/ 114K miles on her. I know she won't sell quick at that price, but that's what its worth to me. I will keep it and drive on the weekends, before I sell it for $5000. It costs me next to nothing to keep it,

I will let people look at the other cheaper cars, then look at mine if they have the cash, and see the difference in the condition of a garage kept, pampered car, vs the regular 10-11 year old worn out junk.

But for the original topic It depends on your situation, I would not want a 4th gen as a daily driver myself, but I was fine with daily driving my 4th gen for 5+ years before I purchased my GTO.

Prices on average 4th gens (common option levels/colors/miles) won't drop too much lower, like someone said above..... the prices they're selling for now don't put them as competition for a brand new $35k car. Some of the super low mile and/or rare examples will continue to drop for a while longer, before stabilizing.

Well, going to look at a Z with 49k miles for 12k. To much money... Yea, but its at a dealer and i am tired of dealing with some of the idiots I have wasted time and money going to look at.

Case 1: 19k mile 99z was looking for 10.5k for the car, agreed to 10k. 4.5hr trip one way and about 70 dollars in fuel and about 60 in tolls with the trailer. Car was a POS!!! Failed to mention scratches in the paint (black car, white deep scratches), interior smelled like had/has water leak (so thats new carpet and padding needed) and last but not least a leaking headgasket. WTF!!!! I tell you I am driving 4.5 hrs, ask if the car is clean...told everything is great with the car.

Case 2: 2hr drive, told the car is clean (my fault for not carfaxing it, since the guy seemed totally honest about everything on the car) Look at the car, drive the car, something seems off, look at the paint, find overspray spot on the corner of the glass. Turns out the car was a salvage. He buys them, fixes them and sells them. Oh and fails to mention the fact before wasting my time driving there. Needless to say I let him know what I thought about that.

So now I am going to pay extra just to get it over with...lol

I'd take a 4th gen... because I dont like the 5th gens. Yes, the new engine makes more power, but in a heavier package with a hideous back half and ugly interior. No thank you

edit: since everybody else is talking about their own cars for some reason, I got mine for $9500, with 37,000 on the clock in July, 2007
