After all that's happened, should I keep the Hawk??
for details it's a 99 Firehawk, black, 6spd, ttops car. Needs: hood repainted, trans rebuild, motor fix.
I've debated this many times before and I HAD the car sold last week, but just before we signed papers the motor started a knock... probably in the valvetrain. Seems like I've sank enough money into the car since I've owned it. But I'm trying to figure out if I should keep it now after everything that's happened or get it fixed to sell it or just sell it as is. If I fix it I'll probably pull the 8.7:1 CR motor back out (was going to do turbo build until I realized I didn't want to spend the money) & sell the motor, then put a LQ4 or something in it and have a nice 4xx rwhp Hawk, or maybe sell the car as a roller.
My only concern with keeping it is knowing the odomoter reads 148k+ on a collectors edition car plus every next mile I drive. I'll only put about 8k/year on it. But three years from now it'll have at least 170k miles and in the back of my mind I hate that on a car like this. Granted, just about everything else on the car won't have the miles the odomoter reads (fresher motor, accessories, rebuilt trans, suspension, etc). Will I be loosing alot more money by putting miles on it? My payoff is only $4400 and I can borrow about $6500 and use the extra to fix some things on it. If I don't keep it I'll get a decent $5000-ish vehicle that has 4wd, keep costs low, and have something I don't bother driving everywhere. I am going on 23 this year, to many that may be young, but to me I don't feel very young. But like everyone says, every once in awhile I may have the need for speed. So IDK

I'd keep the car personally. Is that your dd? If so, then definetly get another dependable dd. This way you can build it how you want it as the $$ comes in. I don't know that I would take a loan to fix up the car though, not in these times for sure. Just my 2 cents worth.

Keep it. It's a HAWK man and you just don't see them very often The only ones I have ever seen have been at shows I just have a plain ole T/A and I plan on keeping it going as long as I can and then giving it to my youngest daughter
I will keep mine going no matter what and look forward to the day I can pass it on to her. We call it "Mollies car". She loves racing at least as much as I do and gets mad when we leave the burnout pit But I get to drive it for the next 8 1/2 years

I think it's way too late to think about miles & hurting the value amy further.
Even if the motor was good, what amount DID you have it sold for?
You'll see that value again.
Fix it, drive it, enjoy it.
If you're not gonna fix it,then dump it off & let someone new do it.
Good Luck, ...

Keep it. BUT, never borrow money to mod my friend!!! Unless its a small amount that you can repay fast. I did borrowed a big amount to rebuild my engine and I'm still paying it 2years later and I'm a bit hangry.
On the other hand, I'm telling you that the last 2years have been a blast!! The only real regrets that I have is that I didnt go all out because I was a noob with LS1.
I suggest you go big the first time out or you go all budget...

Johnnystock...
I understand what you're saying. But if I put that extra money to good use and if I needed a bailout, the car then would be worth the extra money I borrowed for it. Right now I'm deciding between going all out & finishing the turbo project or swapping motors & going with a 430-ish rwhp NA setup. Would someone buy this 99 Firehawk that has a decent turbo setup with a decent clutch, same 347 motor, and self-rebuilt trans for $10k... probably. And for $7500 financed I could have that 430ish rwhp setup with the hood repainted & self-rebuilt trans. The only thing that would suck is still having a 10 bolt on either setup. If I don't launch the car (which I don't) people say the 10 bolt should hold up at 570rwhp on a 6spd. Now a decision between those two is really a tough one!

10 bolts are really hit or miss, I know guys who broke them on stock power with street tires and I know guys running 11's with sticky tires and there 10 bolt is holding up somehow. And honestly I would keep the car and enjoy it, having 14x,xxx + miles already it already lost any sort of collectablility that it will have. Most with collector cars consider 50-60 thousand high miles. But I really wouldnt worry about it, these cars were made to be drivin not sit in a garage...
