At 98k your fine for a cam. These motors can take a huge amount of abuse. The tranny will break long before your motor does. I'm doing heads, cam, and intake next month and I have just under 84k on the clock.

Its never too late to start modding you just have to be prepared to replace broken parts. If I were you id find a deal on a bare block and stock crank, buy some forged rods and pistons an then your shortblock will be fresh and able to handle whatever you throw at it.

I agree with Plum Krazy...when you are doing the cam swap...I'd get a better/fresher valvetrain i.e. dual springs, chromeoly pushrods, new lifters (LS7), rocker arms (harland, comp, yella terra). I'd also recommend getting a new timing chain set; (double roller, LS2 timing chain set).

mine has 196,XXX and i'm just now starting to mod it. i also have a '04 colorado crew cab to drive if it breaks. i say buy a beater to drive around so if the car does break you still have something to get you to work.

Go for it. I just bought my first LS1 a few months ago. It was bone stock with 150,000 miles on it when i bought it. Ive already got a full exhaust for it, intake, programmer and other bolt ons. It doesnt burn oil and still gets 40+ PSI oil pressure at a hot idle, however it does leak oil (rear main?) Im planning on freshening it up a little bit over the next winter. Im even thinking of putting 100 shot to it....haha

Bought my car at 127,000 and it was bone stock when I got her. Since then I've put all the mods in my signature, plus some repairs like new water pump, t-stat, radiator, clutch kit and rear main seal was leaking.
BUT! I expected most of things needing to get done with so many miles. Car still runs very strong, has decent oil pressure (35psi), not a lot of engine noise. Next thing going in is 4.10 gears with all new seals and bearings, 10 bolt isn't noisy and seems to be fine so I hope it still holds up. Next thing about to go is the tranny. Which im suprised how its held up with 145,000 now on it.
Just play it safe, be smart and don't take any chances when you do your mods.

if your going as far as a cam, while your in there just spend the extra bucks and do lifters and rods. Cheap enough and its a sure way to keep things runnin smooth (until you loose a main bearing). if your serious about keeping the car and modding it out i would consider engine options. 160k is a lot of miles. Dont get me wrong, if it was very well maintained, i wouldnt worry. Run a compression check to see how shes doing. Then go from there. If your tearing the front apart at the least you should be doing a timing chain, oil pump and water pump. @160k miles its not worth chancing it since they are all off already.
