Default HP TV LQ-4 engine shows

On HPTV over the last couple of month’s, part of the shows showed the use of a used 2005 LQ4 truck engine. here is a synopses:

Salvaged yard LQ4 from Alabama, engine torn down and replaced bearings, timing chain and honed the block. Computer and harness from Howell. From what I can tell they used everything else. Dyno’ed = 386 hp with LT headers.

Then next show replaced the stock cam with a Comp 54-416-11, LSP 1.85 RR, and new springs. Had the computer updated by Howell then another dyno run 411 HP (OK this sounds very plausible hp gain).

Next show they replaced the stock truck intake with a Fast LX intake with a 92mm TB opening and Big Mouth 92 mm TB. After a hiccup using a non modified computer which netted a loss in hp on the dyno they changed out the PCM with another from Howell with some added timing (I believe 10 degrees). Not very clear at all at this point from the show as they left out what was done to the computer. They re-dyno’ed and got 434 hp. OK this sounds plausible too but then they reran the engine on the dyno a few times and the net result was 514 hp – yes that is what they said twice. Something about the PCM was self adjusting itself. OK this is where I have to stop and say “How can the computer alone gain 80 hp by self learning?

Thanks,

It can't. And that motor won't make that power without pistons with valve reliefs, well ported milled heads and a kickass exhaust either

SOMbitch,

I hear you man and I'm with you but this is "exactly" what was said over the shows on this engine build. No new pistons or heads were used.

Engine dyno. I saw the episode, everything was legit until the magical computer sneezed and let go of another 80hp. I'd think ~450fwhp (~385rwhp in a F-car) is in the ballpark of what a LQ4 with 220/224 cam, stock 317's and 92/92 should make, but the 500+ from the super computer crap is just that.....tv garbage.

Yes all this was done on an engine dyno and it's "Build on a Budget" stories. The LQ4 is a 6 liter so it should produce more HP and torque but when it jumped from 434 to 514 hp on some computer "learning" I knew something was real real odd.

On a 2002 LS1 using this (220/224) cam, RR and springs and with a tweak to the computer is a 25 HP gain possible? Real reality not TV reality.

I guess they had to make Comp Cams and all the other companys who gave them the parts for the build look good.

well after my car was first running it didn't feel near as strong at first...then after about 25 miles down the road it felt like a whole different car

of course i have an intermittent problem where the car won't downshift properly and seems to lose power so maybe it was doing that on the first start and then went back to "normal"

I did some research and figure it out, It a new "Super Self-Learning Mega-Horsepower Computer" Horsepower will be selling these for $500 each.

All kidding aside this is what I hate about television, they always find a way to ruin a good show.

is it possible the engine was simply learning the MAF signal and holding out timing at first?
