Default is it cheaper to build or buy a motor

I was looking at building a 408 but not sure if its going 2 cost more to build it or just buy it. I would like to get around the 600+hp range n/a to the ground but don't know if that's realistic. so I need some help. I was thinking I would have around 6k for the motor so another 2k would have to float my way for a rearend.
I'm going to use it for summer time everyday & for strip use.
I found a 408 kit the othere day for 2200 obo and offered 1800 & he took the offer & so I thought that was a steal of a deal or that price what do u think

I would never build a shortblock. I was in the same boat as you. There is so much involved in the bottom half with clearances and tolerances. The rest of the motor is pretty simple. DONG GO CHEAP - huge mstake!
Give LME a call they will set you up! Ask for Bryan, hes awesome!

it would be an iron block & here's the rotating assembly I was lookin at
diamond forged pistons 4.030 #24853
1cc DOME reliefs clear 2.125 valve. may clear larger intake valve.
includes pins, pistons are marked.
no rings.
GRP aluminum rods #30345 these are upgraded to the PRO material and also include arp 2000 cap screws.
CALLIES dragonslayer crankshaft #64599
ls2 timing gear still pressed on, 24 tooth ls1 reluctor wheel.
crank might need a polish, but it looks like everything is ready to go.
entire setup has been internally balanced.
bob weight listed on the crankshaft is 1617 grams.

mile passes. only a dozen of those passes were at 7800-8000 rpm. motor with etp ls7 heads and a 282/292 711 solid roller made 600 to the tires through an auto.
the rest of the passes were with a set of stock 317 heads and a tsp 248/254 cam and never spun over 6800. figure around 480-500whp.

NOW I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS WITH L92 HEADS & THAT WOULD MAKE SOME POWER WITH A 300 SHOT OF N2O. I CAN GET A BLOCK FOR $200 OR LES THATS WHY I WAS GOING 2 BUILD ONE.ITS OUT OF A 02 TRUCK SO I WONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING WITH THE RELUCTOR I GUESS. LET ME KNOW WHAT U THINK BEFORE I BUY THIS

Just get a GMPP crate engine. Good power and a good warranty.

Are you building it or having it built?

For me thats the deciding factor. I am having my 408 built from a local guy.

He is very good at what he does, but going with a built long block comes with a warranty and saves you headache.

It was the first time.

At that time it had a 572 GM Performance Parts 720 Horsepower Crate engine. They bracket raced the car.

I got the car as a roller and with the help of Team Z Motorsports and many others converted it into a Nostalgia Pro Street 25.2 car.

We used the original steel quarters and roof panels.
