As far as "must haves", I would say at least a 12 bolt or 9". Then a full suspension set up, whether it be a handling or drag setup, it will be a huge improvement over stock crap in its intended purpose. Then all the bolt-on crap of course, remember a full bolt-on car can dip into the 11's pretty easily

The #1 thing you should ever do with any kind of sports car that you mod should be:
Move to an area that doesn't require emissions. I know that is the only thing holding me back from doing most anything to any of my cars. Its strict as all hell around here.

a must have for f-bodies is a well thought out PLAN of what you want to do with your car. f-bod's can be used for so much: drag, road race, dd, street/strip, etc etc. not to mention that conventional wisdom cannot be used on our beloved f-bod's when it comes to modding. whats good for a small block chevy might not be good for a ls1, and normally isn't. a well thought out plan will keep someone in check and keep them from buying needless parts(handheld tuner, t-stat, 10 bolt upgrades, etc)

A loving/wonderful/beautiful/caring wife or girlfriend who will put up with our addiction to modding and can deal with all the money being spent on these cars. Unless your single, this doesnt apply to you lol
Now for the mods to the car itself...
- lowering springs/shocks & window tint. this alone makes the car look 10x better.
- Exhaust system. doesnt matter which one aslong as the car has a rumble.
I could list more but most of the other replies list the mods you really do need for these cars.

I did all your basic boltons except electric waterpump. Car made good power as a bolton car, but what you definetly need is some gears, nice suspension, and wheels to start out. Then I cammed mine and got a FAST intake and a TB, and its amazing but I still want more, who doesnt? But if you wanna go straight I'd recommend a 12 bolt or 9 inch with a decent gear, and also a good clutch if your a 6 speed car.

Full exhaust, in addition to the power increase of the bolt ons, a muscle car should SOUND like A MUSCLE CAR!!
And in addition to the good job, an understanding wife that appreciates your car is very important!

^^^ Amen, to the "stupid VA laws". I know in the Northern part of the state most of the counties get on emissions pretty hard.. Sorry for going off track of the thread, just had to throw in my VA motor law bashing..

or you could find another car that looks like yours and run the emissions test on that one, but you'd have to know the inspector
or you could swap parts every year or 2 when it comes time for emissions, but depending on the parts that could be a pita.
just a thought
