Ethanol does have a higher octae rating than gasoline, but a lower specific heat. This means that a gas company can inflate the octane number with ethanol and since ethanol is cheaper it saves them money. The lower specific heat means that ounce for ounce you will get less power from ethanol than from gasoline. If you had a vehicle that could compensate for the ethanol in the system and increase the fuel, you could make more power with ethanol. Our cars are not that smart so it simply costs us power.
I use a weather computer to predict ET at the track and can definately notice a change in performance from using other than Chevron gas. I lose as much as .200 sec in the 1/4 mile. We don't have sonoco or 76 here so I can't speak about them. On the street you may not notice the diference in cheap 91 and good 93.

hell, it's my money and my jeep...well actually sold it like 2 years ago. Say what you want, but i drove it for the first few months i had it on 87 and noticed a difference instantly after switching to 93. i'm not saying it gave me 10 extra miles to the gallon, but it did help.

i use 91 here, mainly from QuikTrip since they have a guarantee that if your car is damaged by their gasoline, they pay for the repairs. from my understanding with Arco, they usually cost less since they actually own everything from start to finish whereas most other companies outsource their drilling and some other areas in the process. Either case, i never go there. Circle K, which uses 76, has a couple of stations in the city here that have racing fuel.. i think 109 octane or something like that, but it's too far and not necessary in my case to be using.
i do toss some octane booster in there from time to time though.

Shell 93 Vpower only here. Even in my Pathfinder. I dont care what anyone else says I can totally tell the difference between driving either car with 87 and 93. And from what I have read and seen Shell is the cleanest. The grocery store stations and Bjs and them all use crappy gas.
IF I cant find a Shell then I will use Sunoco but thats it.
