spun my 98 past 6500 and boom on it too with only 95k miles on it and they have a really crappy oiling system too

mine does just fine... had it for a while now. take care of anything and it will last for a good while. beat the hell out of it... ls motors can take alot...but cant take everything

100K here on my salvage title '98 and no problems (knock on wood). Although if I would have gotten a steal like you are I would have gone with that instead.

It's nice having a tether on the gas cap that reaches the little notch thing Water temp gauge is another nice plus. The perimeter bolt valve covers kinda suck but it's another $100 if you're a smart shopper when doing a head swap. I've heard that the '98 blocks have some oiling issues that the 99+s didn't have with the way the block is made. Anyone have any info on that or was I fed a load of BS?

the oiling is true..

i got my center bolts for 35 bucks off ebay when i did my head swap..

Lemons could you link us to the thread where info on the oiling issues are found? this is the first ive heard of it and would like to know more.....

I wouldn't buy a 98 just like I wouldn't buy a 93. There's nothing wrong with either car overall but take the below into consideration.

A good rule of thumb is to not buy cars with model year specific parts. Meaning it has parts or systems specific only to that year that weren't used again in other model years making them mechanically uniqiue. This is usually because improvements were made the next year to alleviate issues from those systems or to simply improve on the design.

If you are on a budget it's not like a 99 is any different in price these days. The 00-01 is following closely behind.

I have one with 128k on the clock. Fully cam'd and spins out to 6,500 RPM and put down 383rwhp a few months ago...I have another 98 in the garage that is very strong as well. I would NOT hesitate to buy one. Don't believe all the bad hype...they are strong...

EDIT: **** the oiling non-sense as well. I'm on the stock oil pump and still put down 60psi under WOT and trust me the oil is making it to the top end and all areas of the block just fine.

The drain back hole in the back of the block needs to be enlarged to allow the oil to drain more quickly back into the pan....

178,000 miles on my 98 and it runs like a bat out of hell.

98's also have more aggressive cams and larger injectors.

I have a 98 m6,33k miles, it had the oil problem,

I've upgraded my car mostly to 01/02 setup,

I liked the powercurve in my 98 better than the younger cars, it pulled realy hard down
Low,

I've had no problems with tuning the pcm,

I love our 98. Paid 6k for it with 68k on the clock back in 06. Only had to replace a starter and TPS.

dont hesitate on buying it. the only problem i have had out of my 98 in the past 20k miles of me ******* the **** out of it( i mean ******* it) is my rearend gave out (go figure)

In general I would agree, but this usually applies to the first year of a complete redesign or new model introduction. 1998 was neither the first year for the 4th gen Camaro nor was it the first year for the LS1 engine....it's just the first year they appeared together.

Honestly, just about every car has *some* year specific (or bi-year specific) parts. It's not like a '98 is a one-off year car that'll be super hard to find parts for.

Again, I'd buy another '98 in a heartbeat. And that's coming from a guy that's owned a '98, a '99, a '00, and an '02. They are all great, with some minor differences that can make each more or less appealing depending on your goals.
