would you buy a 98
probably a dumb question, but im thinking of buying a 98 z28,being the first year of the ls1 for the camaro im hesitating, how does it stack up againts the newer 99-02 models

Yes. I would buy one. The LS-1 was used in the Corvette in '97. That being the case, it's not like '98 (the first year it appeared in the Camaro) was breaking new ground (in any way that really matters). Just my $.02...

I have had two 98s...a SS I bought new and a 98 TA. BOTH were flawless. I traded the 98 in 2000 on a new WS6 Vert, but I still see the car regularly. Last I heard it had over 210,000 miles on it. My 98 TA has 140,000 on it and has never needed ANYTHING except a PS pump. So yeah, I would buy one.

I did.
The weaker rod bolts are really no issue as long as you don't spin over 6500. I like the fact that I have a functional temp guage instead of the dummy guage.....
Somebody link him to the "differences in years" sticky.

IMO it's not the perimeter bolts that's so much a PIA as the coil packs being seperately mounted. Yeah I forgot about the dumba$$ computer on 98's but to a good tuner it should be no real issue.......
There are some other small issues like the hatch release giving problems but really nothing to run from. Just get the one you want and forget the year. Also the 98's are not as prone to piston slap as the 01-02's
Somebody link him to sticky, I couldn't find it......

I love the '98s. They are my favorite year, because most of their little differences are things that I like. Note that I also have an '02, but I still prefer the '98. Only thing better about my '02, IMO, is the LS6 intake and lack of EGR. Both things you can easily change if you wish.

I recently picked up my 98 Trans Am, it's bone stock just turned 88K miles and went 13.41 @ 103.37mph this past weekend. 1998's seem to have alot of one year only things (for an LS1 f-body at least) which make them interesting to me. Good luck with it if you purchase

My 98 runs like a champ with 140,000 on the clock. Full bolt-ons, stall converter, built trans yada yada yada. Even floor-boarded it down I10 at 170mph for a few min lol.
Lots of things are pros, the cons IMO are the rod bolts, and the valve covers. Only reason the valve covers suck is cuz you cant just bolt on the truck coils for an extra 10hp 18tq but one of the sponsors makes a bracket for this.
Frost will tune it for 125 bucks plus shipping, waiting on mine in the mail right now, ls6 intake is like 300 bucks, and viola.
By the 98 and dont worry about it, if ur worried about the rod bolts it is possible to replace them without pulling the motor.
