Default How to identify a specific ls1

I am looking at an LS1 to purchase. It is kind of an unknown. I have the block number so I know it is an aluminum 02-04. Is there any way to tell what specific car it was in. How can I be sure it isn't a front wheel drive.

The LS1s I have seen have a date code with month, day, and year of motor production on the rear cover above the rear main seal. Trans will have to be off to see it. Hope that helps.

They should have a sticker with a BAR code and the VIN of the car it came from. I think it's usually on the front by the timing cover. But it's been so long I can't remember for sure.
