do a lq4 or lq9 build up. thats the 6.0 lsx based block. you can make lots of power and its not too expensive, its alos great for boosted applications

i would just build the ls1 or buy a 6.0 and put forged internals, cam etc, if money allows heads. if you build it right you wont need a warranty. and new engine warranties arent that reliable, im sure they would void it for just about any mod you do to it if they found out.

Get a nice forged 346 block stick a good sized (mid 230 duration) cam in it good set of heads, and be done with it. Or get a 6.0l block like others have said and do the same.

You can get a new 405hp LS6 for $3000 from scoggin dickey and some other sponsors. Much better option than $4500 for a stock LS1. If you get a new LS3 you have to do the conversion stuff for the knock sensors and the reluctor ring. LS6 drops right in.

What do you mean by "it blew"?
What did you have done to the motor that blew? stock?
Did the whole thing catch on fire, wtf?
Do you need a topend as well?

You can spend 3K for a forged shortblock, throw a nasty cam and some good springs to match. Or just get a stock used LS1 shortblock, rebuild it to stock with upgraded pistons, then spend the rest on heads/trans/clutch. Lots of options man, I would NOT spend 4500 on a stock LS1 just for the warranty.

I took it to a mechanic and I have a feeling he doesn't really know what he is talking about All he said was I need a new engine, so I got a number from a friend and I am taking it to a guy who specializes in gm cars so that's in two days.. Hopefully he will tell me exactly what's going on..I will post the news as soon as I find out and let u know..

I'm thinking that since you don't know too much and the car was probably was stock I would go buy an ls1 shortblock for $2000 and have a shop install it for $1000 or something.

Option 1, get a ls1 stroker 383 bottom end and a cam for about 4k, re use everything in your top end if its good. then that gives you flexibilty on upgrading the top end to match at you budget and time

option 2, LS2 motor or LQ9 IRON block, the LS2 will need conversion parts to drop in LS1 car. the LQ9 wont both are 6.0 blocks with 4.0 bore and will fit your budget and leave room for upgrades.

option 3, get a new stock ls1 short block for less than 2k, and then you have 4k to upgrade the top end with if you so desire.

ask the guy how it blew and don't let him spend any more time working on it until you know whats going on.

the last thing i'd want is to have my car sitting in some random shop, thinking i'm going to have any random "mechanic" rebuild or replace my engine for what could be an unreasonable amount.

if i could, i'd have the car towed back home and park it while i spend a good amount of time researching my options.
if the block is still good, i'd rebuild that. if it isn't, i'd buy one in good condition that was pulled from a car that is being parted out and start building that.

what you've got is an opportunity to build your motor at a time you may not have been prepared to do so. thing is, you have to take yourself out of a position where you may make an uninformed decision that you may later regret.
it wouldn't hurt to post this up in the internals section.

honestly if you have 6k to spend...take out a personal loan for about 4-5k and do a big stroker from one of the engine builders on here. it will save you in the long wrong if you eventually want to start modding. the only downfall is if you don't have the supporting rear, suspension then take it easy until you can afford it. start working some OT lol and GL!

just blew my engine
Hey, me too! Put a modular ford in it, I would say that the type of trans you have will impact the answer. I say go with the LS1. If you want, do a cam swap to get some more power.
Or go LS6 http://www.sdparts.com/product/17801...EngineKit.aspx you will have to swap some stuff from your LS1to make it work though.

What happened? something made you take it to him... Was it knocking, did it seize, throw a rod, just wont start..? Details man. You may have something very simple wrong with it, dont take a shadetree mechanic's word for anything. I once had a mechanic tell me that my timing was off when he heard my cam.

+1 on the details, you could have a minor repair to make and some guy is trying to rip you off, i dont trust any shop to do any repair unless they are a specialist, no average garage touches my cars. I dont even like going in for alignments but I have no choice on that one.

But you also didnt say what you plan do do with it, daily driver, weekend track time, mostly track time etc. that will play a big part in what you should do. Personally I would check the classifieds on this site, there is always someone selling decent mileage stock LS1s, mildly built, and fully built engines. Or get your block rebuilt with forged parts and pick up some used heads and all the bolt ons if you dont have them already.

Either way, get your car back and hold on to it until you decide, a tow is cheap compared to so many of the horror stories people post about leaving their ride at the mercy of some shady mechanic.
