Isn't the weight really more important than the brand? I would think that a synthetic 0W-30 oil (like GC or Mobil 1 for example) would be better because it thickens less upon cooling and therefore is better able to lubricate when the engine is warming up, when most engine wear occurs.

Apparently the brands do mean something, because as some people will tell you, or even your own research might, there are some synthetic motor oils that are no longer "true" synthetics because of changes they've made in their "recipes," like the reduction of Zinc and other stuff that was seen as crucial to protecting engine parts. Mobil-1 is an example of that; I can recall a thread or an article stating that because Mobil-1 was changing the content of their oil somewhat that it could no longer be regarded as a "true" synthetic, or at least as good as it was in the past.
Do some research on the matter or wait for some of the others to chime in on that, but brand names do matter to some degree.
Check out bobistheoilguy.com for more 'info than you'll ever need on oil...

If the Castrol is 0 w 30 grade and says "made in Germany", is that the "good" stuff? Does the phrase "european formula" AND the date codes 02xxx to 05xxx have to also be present? One of these two extra criteria good enough?
