Ok, I'm sure it's been covered, but I couldn't find it anywhere, so I'm asking...
Does it hurt the engine at all to cruise for an extended amount of time at say 3000-3500 rpm?
I only ask because I am planning on taking a road trip this spring but my T/A has a 4.11 gear in it and that makes cruising at highway speeds in excess of 3k rpm. The trip is from chicago to the smokey mountains and will probably be cruising for 10 hours with quick breaks for food and gas.

A 4.11 geared A4 is not a smart money wise choice for such a long cruise.
With the gas you burn you could probably rent like a new sonata/altima/mazda 6/ from enterprise. All much more comfortable cars with far better fuel economy.

Watch your oil comsumption. Long periods at higher rpms will have high oil comsumption. This is caused by higher cylinder pressures which in turn results in a higher amount of blow by.
All LS1's produced after May 01 had redesigned rings to help control this perfectly normal blow by.
I bet you go through at the least 2 quarts!

9 trips to Florida from Cleveland,Ohio. 1100 miles each direction. First 6 trips were with the OEM 3.23s',last 3 were with 4.56s'. At freeway legal speeds,3.23s' gave me 24.5mpg,4.56s' are giving me 21.5mpg. 4.56 cruise rpm is 2900(ScanGaugeII reading),once hooked up with a fast-moving group on I95/I26 in South Carolina on cruise control at 4000rpm for over an hour.High rpms don't bother me.

Man, I am glad I got an M6.. I can be doing like 125+ and be at 3500rpms or something.. I know 90mph is straight up 2k, that's what I usually cruise at. I am curious what it would be with highway gears, I have no clue what gears are in it now but with a 12 bolt I am sure they aren't the stock ratio.
