They declared this area in a "state of emergency" Wednesday and I was out driving to my girlfriends in the worst of it. I just got stir crazy being stuck at home and wanted to try it. The car isn't prepared to be snow driven in the least, but got me there without any real drama. The only thing I had to do was the whole reverse and forward rolls to get it moving on two occaisions. I think with snow tires and some weight in the trunk it'd do pretty damn good so long as I'm not climbing any extremely large hills.

Here's a pic from before I dug it out and drove away.

Warning to all southerners not accustomed to snow driving:

If you have Z rated tires, do attempt to drive in snow. Even if the tires are brand new. Not even to the end of the block to pick up a paper. You'll crash.

Its not the RWD part that makes these cars suck in snow like many people believe. Its the wide performance tires. If you mounted some 225/60/R15 snow tires on these cars and put a couple of bags of sand in the trunk, you'd be unstoppable.

One of the main reasons I went is because I watched my neighbor climb his raggedy Grand Am out of it's spot and scoot off into the distance. Then I saw several front wheel drive cars wheeling about like it was nothing. I thought to myself, "Hell naw they didn't!" and went about doing the same.

I think it'd crawl with the proper set up. It's no Jeep, but it'd get me where I got to go.

Yes. Make sure you change all 4, not just the rear.

Ive done it, but prefer not to. I drove my old 00 Z through a ridiculous amount of snow about 17 miles. That trip home from work would usually take me about 30-45 minutes. It took me nearly 2 and a half hours through rush hour traffic. I jumped on the expressway thinking it would be a better option. There were snow piles separating each lane about a foot high. The *** end would get stuck in those piles and Id be driving sideways till I could kick it out.

I also did it with my 01 once. That sucked. I went out to meet up with a girl. When we came outside there was like 5" on the ground. I was on pretty bald summer tires. The car would not stay straight. I got a few blocks and said to hell with it. Turned around and parked.

Thank god for winter beaters.

This is absolutely correct.

I drove my '02 Z all last winter in tons of snow, had Blizzaks in a 225/55/16 size, on a skinny 7.5" wheel, and 100lbs of rocks in the trunk. I had no problem maintaining full control at the same speeds as 4x4 SUVs on the barely-plowed highways or main roads. And I never got stuck even in the deep snow of totally unplowed parking lots.

Forget about those "high performance snow or all-season" tires. You need a true snow tire, like the Blizzak WS-60.

On the other hand, this winter I haven't been driving the '02 car, so I never put the snow tires on. I did try to move the car around in my driveway with about an inch of snow on the ground, and had trouble doing so with BFG KDWS tires (275 on a 17"), which are "supposed" to work in snow. Mine have plenty of tread, and they sucked.

I drove home about 15 miles on 555r drag radials that were down to the wear bars. That was fun but surprisingly I never got stuck and yes I did have to climb a nice incline getting onto the freeway. It can be done you just have to be smart about it and not act like a teenage kid... coming from the guy who is 20 haha.

I DD my Z for two winters with some z-rated 245/16s. It wasn't much fun but was managable as long as I was careful. This year I got the AWD TBSS which is great for the 12 inches of snow we have on the ground here.

I drove my 01 WS6 in the snow quite a few times and its a love/hate thing. Last week we got about 3'' of snow on the ground and I was working about an hour away from home. I had to go on I-78 and Rt. 33...two major highways. I didn't go over 30MPH and was scared as all hell that the rear of the car would kick out in the path of the numerous 18 wheelers barreling past me at 60MPH.

Just the other night before we got slammed with 13'' of snow I took my car out when there was about an inch on the ground. I got stuck in it. Car would not straighten out and kept sliding sideways down a hill. I tried to back up onto the grass, some of which was still exposed to try and get traction. Nope, just tore up a whole lot of grass. Ended up having to go home and get the 4WD SUV out to pull my car straight onto the road.

But it is soo much fun throwing the car around in the snow!

Oh and my car as of now has 285/40/17 tires on the rear...
