Default How to pull a 4th gen f-body engine?

I am a 32 year old ex mechanic that has pulled my number of engines including lt1 camaro shortblock through the top. The ls models look alot tighter clearances. The question is i guess i do not have a lift anymore is it posible to get the ls through the top or do u have to pull it through the bottom. If it has to come out he bottom anyone have any suggestions pulling it without a lift?

Pulling from the bottom is the easiest/fastest way to get the motor out. When I pulled mine, I used an ATV jack to rest the K member on and used a cherry picker to raise the car and seperate it from the engine/K member assembly by attaching it to the front radiator support. After the motor was free and the clearence permitted, I pulled the whole k member and engine out from under the car with the ATV jack, and then lowered the car onto jackstands so the sole weight of the car was off the cherry picker. It may seem like hard, but it's really not too difficult. Just use common sense, and take your time.

i pulled mine through the top, the balancer, intake & valve covers were off.

i have seen threads where people used a cherry picker to lift up the front of the car & essentially left the k member & engine/trans behind

My friend and I did basically the same thing when we pulled the motor out of his SS. The one difference is he made a wooden dolly on casters for the k-member / suspension / motor to roll out on. It only took us about 45 min or so to get the motor completely out.

45 mins to get the engine out?? WOW!

Maybe more time efficent to do headers, cam, heads, and headers while the engine is out!

maybe even spark plugs!

once you have done it a time or 2 its cake.

im down to 2 hours.

this is rolling it off the trailer into the shop, pulling the k-member, removing engine from k-member, putting k-member back in car, rolling car back on trailer and sweeping the shop. this is all with a lift tho.

I need to hang out with some of you folks and get the wrenching down...
Some of the times posted are very impressive.

From the top twice now myself. First time was a bit long (4 hours) but it was the first time dealing with an Ls1. This second time around I had it out of the top in little over an hour. Going back in is just as fast. Done it this way now in just your normal garage, no lift, just jack stands and a cherry picker.

I've dropped it out the bottom in about 45 min..took it out the top in about the same. I don't have Air Cond. so that helps alot.

This is when I installed it through the top..

Pull it out the bottom. After doing it a few times, I can do it alone in about an hour and a half. Super easy.

Everyone will tell you their way is the best way. I have pulled them out the bottom in under and hour.

I have pulled them out the top. . .in under an hour.

It is all personal preference. There is no correct or incorrect way because both safely get you the same results and in the same time frame and in my opinion neither is easier than the other. I will continue to do my own cars out the top, I personally find it preferable but it is all just a matter of what you like to do.

2 short straps and wrapped them around the upper core support and hooked them to the engine hoist. then when i got the body up in the air, i used a come along hooked to the rafters of my garage to hold it up so i could get the cradle and engine out with the engine hoist out of the way.

I would really like to see some step by step pics of someone pulling the engine from the top. All the write ups I have seen are for pulling it from the bottom.
