I get 170-180 on a tank, everything is original on my car, I drive the car normal most of the time and still get the crappy gas miledge like the OP, I get like 14-16mpg on a 35mile total day city to school and thats only twice a week rest of the week is way less than 30miles for just going places.

Not sure what type of "LT1" car you're referring to, but if it was an F-body it had a 15.5 gallon metal tank. That's what they all had from '93-'98. In '99 they released the 16.8 gallon plastic tank.

What trans? 14-16 is pretty normal for all city driving with an A4. I usually get 15-17 in the city.

Check for an exhaust leak before the O2 sensors. Also, check to make sure your O2 sensors aren't bad. My 5.0 had a wicked exhaust leak that caused me to get 15mpg (with a 12 gallon tank ) no matter how I drove it. I fixed the leak, then finished off that tank of gas. 1/2 the tank was with 15mpg (aka, most of it) and the last 1/2 or so was with the fixed O2 sensor. I averaged 18mpg. I haven't run another tank through yet, but I'm guessing it'll be closer to 21-22, which would be fantastic.

weird, I'm getting about 170-180 per tank before and after my header install.. I'm thinking it could be o2's.. I changed my plugs / airfilter cleaned.. fuel filter.. any thing else?

I would run a bottle of Lucas upper cylinder lube/fuel injector cleaner thru it. And make sure your tires at running at 32#s. Underinflated tires (Sure I was gonna refill the MTs from 18#s to 32# when I left the track) can eat up some mileage and some tires very quickly.

I'm in the same boat as you OP. Honestly I think it all comes down to the type of city driving. To school and around town the constant stop and go is horribly, I almost never get to cruise in a gear, there are that many stop signs and lights.

Even with keeping out of the gas, shifting at 2 grand, the best I could manage out of straight in town driving is about 13mpg. I've changed the plugs and cleaned the filter but it still the same. Haven't checked the o2's yet, but since I can manage high 20's on the freeway. I just attribute the in town gas mileage to the type of driving. Who knows, maybe my o2's are bad and they've been the reason all along, I'll replace them eventually, but I'm not in too much of a hurry.

Hope some of this helps, and I have an m6 btw.

No, I didn't. Which is odd, to say the least. Granted, I didn't scan it, so I'm assuming it would have thrown the check engine light at me telling me to scan. No check engine light, no scan.

Honestly that is probable the main reason why you are seeing horrible gas millage. If you do a quick google search for effects of short trips on MPG you will find that it can really hurt it. I even saw some newer civics/accords getting 15ish mpg's which is horrible for them. Below is one link that I found that seems to have some explanation as to why this is true

I travel about 15 miles to work everyday in my ss. I filled up the other day and just dropped down to 3/4 of a tank. I have traveled 94 miles in a 1/4 tank of gas. I travel about 1/2 city 1/2 highway between the house and work.

that actually sounds about 100 percent correct for mileage. 3 miles people. thats all he drives. He barely gets going, then he's done. anyone have a vehicle with the instant fuel economy display? if you do, simulate his trip and you will see why the mileage makes sense

I manage 12-13 city if I beat the ever living **** out of my car. I can get 15 if I drive it like it's a 4 cyl. On the highway It's a pretty steady 24mpg@80mph. This is on 90/10 gas/ethanol in a heads/cam/stock gear/6 speed car.

When I lived 1 mile from work I ended up with 10mpg on my round trip. Extremely short trips are horrible for gas mileage and for the engine.

I think you have an O2/tune issue and the short trips on top of that are killing you.

oh yeah, try cleaning your MAF as well.. if you have a K&N sometimes the oil from the filter will come up if it rains out or what not.. but regardless. Clean MAF / check plugs / air filter / O2 Sensors / try the Seafoam? I just did new plugs / seafoamed last year / i didnt clean maf or mess with the airfilter.. im gonna put a paper in and see what it does..

ya im just going to figure the plugs may need to be changed and the O2's may be going bad as well as attribute it to short trip driving. at least when I get to work after 3-4 miles the engine is at operating temp but I know that's just a dummy gauge in a sense. my tranny and clutch also seem to be having issues which also could be impacting it majorly.

...ive done everything besides injector test, new plugs and O2's. would think everything is good with only 42k miles on the car.

my old '99 z/28 just seemed to get better mileage and at that time I made even shorter commutes to work, etc. :eyes

I had the same issue last year and it turned out to be the gauge cluster. The car seem to get about 100-150 miles to a tank, and finally one day I just kept driving it with a can of gas in the back, lo and behold, it went 100 miles after the guage went past E. Just a thought.

i've thought of this as well. what was the cause of that? did you end up fixing the problem?
