Default T-Top replacement keys

So I have a Z28 that is missing the t-top keys. Does anyone know if you can just walk into a dealership with the VIN and have new keys made up or do they have to re-key the thing? I know this has happened to someone before, but I never saw the outcome.

if your door locks havent been replaced then they should match your t tops but if they were changed then you can just pop out the lock and take it to a locksmith and have them cut you a key for it

1986 speaks the truth. Just this after noon my locksmith popped out my lock and it should be ready tomorrow and re-keyed to my trunk.

There's a very small trick to getting the lock out. SUPER easy once you know it.

Well, when I got the car it only came with the ignition key. So I dont have a valet key either. So with that being said, do you think they can have one cut based off the car info or the VIN or am I SOL and just need to find a locksmith and yadda yadda?

If your T-tops are the originals to your car (look closely at the edges and you can see a faint VIN number etched into the glass) then you'll be able to get the key remade at the dealership, if it still has access to the records, since our cars are old.

That being said, it might not be cheap either.

It may be cheaper to get a key cut from the tumbler in the tops, and that should match the hatch as well.....if the tops are original to your car. If not, you'll have to re-key the tops and the hatch, if you care to.

EDIT: BTW, it's only costing me $20 to get my passenger t-top cylinder re-keyed to my hatch.

What about just getting new cylinders? One of my locks is missing and the other one doesnt match the door. So I was thinking, just replace all the locks to match but I havent found a kit and I'm afraid to go to the dealership. Is there a part number for such a kit?

I just had a entry key made for my 98 at the dealership. You just have to prove ownership of your car and its about $20 for the code and $8.00 to have the key made.

Is this a "skyhook" search or something!? I looked all over but found nothing.

Not all cars have this. The VIN etching was NOT done from the factory, this is a service that was offered by the dealer at additional cost to the customer at the point of sale. It's supposed to be a theft deterent.

Any GM dealer can get you keys based on your VIN, assuming you still have the original T-tops. Show proof of ownership and you're done. If you suspect that the tops might have been replaced, then you'll need a lock smith.

Like others have mentioned they should be the same as the doors unless they have been replaced. You can get a new key from the dealer with your vin number. I think one of my tops must have been replaced because I have 1 t top I can lock with my key and one I cannot.

BTW I like those bike mods... the shattered leg and broken back must have been sweet. My dads or riding are over and I was very lucky I didn't get hurt. I was actually hit by a blown tractor trailer tire on the highway at 80mph. Hit the front of the bike and knocked the entire fairing stay off along with the side skirts and everything. Then it hit my leg and went under my rear tire and I somehow managed to stay up. 4k$ worth of damage to a new 07 gsxr 600.
