Default confused on Piston size

I have a 2001 LS1 out of a camaro and ran it in my 944 porshe, it smoked alot and I was told to run it because it sat and the rigns were stuck.

Well I took it out again and pulled it apart and the machine shop says that a couple of ring lands are broken. To fix the scars and make the pistons fit they have to go 20 over. This is my first true engine build. I have only changed parts on the outside.

First I need to know what stock pistons are and what it means when they mean 20 over.

Am I looking for 20 over rings or pistons?

I would like to also know what other engine block fit the external dimensions of the LS1.

Thank you in advance

STOP!!!! Do not let them work on an LS engine. Any body who knows anything AT ALL about these motors knows you go only .010 over on that block before the sleeves get too thin....

Stock pistons are 3.98 If you do need to go .020 over your block is trashed and you need to find another one......

So there is no bigger sleeve they can put in it. I though the only LS1 that cant be bored is the 98?

3.898

not 3.980

the 97-98's can only go .005 over, the 99+'s can go .010 over as far as honing.

once its resleved, your back to 3.898 bore.

You can resleeve a block to bigger sizes if you wish.

^^^^ yeah typo

You can resleeve the block and punch it out to big cubes but it is not really cost effective. I have seen a LS1 punched out to a 427 but not sure how far you can go. About $1800 IIRC. Contact ERL (sponsor) if you are considering this....
