Default Stock or modded?

Well hence my screen name, I'm finally going to pull the trigger. Trying to decide between a cherry 01 SS bone stock, or a 99 modded to 450 hp. Basically EVERYTHING has been "built" on the 99. The 01 has 50k miles. I could get the 99 for less. I'd just be happy to have an SS. Suggestions?

Definitely the modded one especially if you plan on modding it anyway! But it depends on price difference betweent he 2, who modded it (reputable shop or owner), was it dynotuned and if so where, how long has the mods been in the car etc...

While all that I listed above does check out good, then I definitely say get the modded one if the price between the stock car and modded car is close!! Goodluck and congrats on which ever one you purchase..

Modding your car is half the fun! If money will be tight and you want the mods, then maybe buying the modded one would be the way to go. I bought my car bone stock 3 years ago and I'm glad it was stock.

I will never buy a heavily modded car UNLESS I knew the previous owner personally or a well known shop built it.

You can save buying something previously modded... But you cant guarantee its done right.

I'd go after the stock one.

Stock would be the way to go that way u know what is done when u do it yourself and you can enjoy watching it get faster every little thing u do.

Not to mention... A stock SS is pleanty fast enough for someone who isnt used to having a powerful car... IDK what you owned in the past, but I'm glad I owned a V6 and LT1 before I bought my Camaro. I would have wrapped it around a tree if I were younger and went right for a 450rwhp car...

It was a reputable shop owner. Yeah but having a camaro that was in a "time capsule" is pretty sweet too.

Stock cars can be beat to **** just as bad as modded cars. Just depends how the owner takes care of them and keeps up with maintenance. With a stock car you run the risk of someone who dont give a s*** beats the hell out of the car and does not do the routine maintenance on the car to keep it running right

Wow! We need a LOT MORE info on these cars. Many good posts here about price, condition, prior owners, the list goes on and on. If both are in very good condition with documented maintenance, and you feel that neither was abused, then it is totally a personal choice. I would never buy a heavily modded car under any circumstances but you will find others that will jump on it and not mind spending the big $$ to keep it running perfectly. Like I said, a personal choice and whatever it is, enjoy the new ride!

The one thing I say be careful of is a modded car has had the snot kicked out of it and you don't know how tired the car maybe if you see what I mean... The stock car has been beat for sure but not as hard as the modded one.

Like posted, unless you know the owner and know the complete history of the car I wouldn't touch it. The only way I personally would buy the modded one is if it has a fresh forged motor (built by someone I know), built tranny(by someone I know), and 9", 12 bolt, or S60. In the end its your choice fella. Modding a stock car, you will feel more pride with what you have done for sure and there is more self-satisfaction with it.

Either way, that is my opinion just to help you out though. Good luck with either car fella and congrats if you pulled the trigger on one of them, Enjoy

Beat me to saying it. Most of the stock LS1 cars around here have had the absolute **** flogged out of them. Mine's modded and I don't drive her easy, but I don't abuse the car, either, and it gets all maintenance as needed (before things start going wrong).

There cars are also getting a lot cheaper, meaning the common denominator for the driver is dropping, too. It's a lot easier to break **** in a 310rwhp f-body than it is a 120hp 1980s Tercel or Caravan.

I say the stock ss....

My experience in buying a car that was modded was not a good one. I didn't have a complete mod list and I was always fixing things shortly down the road... Eventually I had to sell the car cause it was a headache.. I've always bought stock after that..

Most people who mod their cars actually take great care of it. Stock is fun when you do all the mods yourself. But you can't beat the price of most cars pre-modded. Worst case you can sell all the mods, put it back to stock and make money, then sell the car for the same price!
