Default Which LS engine should I get...have nothing

I don't know a lot about the various LS engines. I'm wanting to put one in my 81' Firebird. I know some companies make kits where this is a bolt in deal with the F body oil pan.

I'm looking for an engine, is the standard LS1 out of a late model F body my best bet, or will a truck motor be just as good and more cubes

Sorry for the newb ?'s, just wanna spend my $'s wisely.

What are your goals? Hp? Cam? Heads? FI? Power? Et/mph?

What is your budget for a starting point (stock motor)?

I would like something to run mid 12's. It's gonna be my wife's car, she's more concerned with the appearance than performance. I'd just like it to have some ***** and figured the LS seems the way to go since the car is just a roller and I have to buy everything. Budget is about 5k on the drive train

5.3 truck motor.. dirt dirt cheap..
Mid twelve..
Auto:
Converter- if a dd around 3200.. of a street strip weekend warrior 3800-4000.
I would put a 342 rear end since you have a choice from a 6 speed car.
Handheld tune
If for some reason that doesnt get you there put exhaust on it.. that should get you there easy though.
Drag radials are a given at track..
You can get a 5.3 for around 600 with low miles..4l60e 400.. rear 250.. brand new and HIGHLY recommended ptc converter 450.. you got money left over..

M6
Gears
Exhaust
Tune
Intake
I'm not too keen on m6 times.. I'm an auto guy

*typed from phone..

Here's a good link on how to do it on a budget. There are many options available but I would prob pick up a used LQ4/LQ9. In stock form it should run 12s easy.

Thanks. The car has a 3.42 in it now. I'm gonna need the harness and pcm too. I have access to a 4l80e out of a HD truck, but read about segment swaps and got confused, would like to keep it as simple as possible. I do like PTC converters, that's what I run in my turbo Buick

If mid 12's are your goal, I'd prob go with a 5.3. full bolt-ons, stall, and DR's should be pleanty enough to get there. you could do a cam swap for extra insurance, if you have some money left over..
